I took my 92 year old grandmother (Busia in Polish) to Stanley's several years ago. She had grown up in Pennsylvania and spent many years living in Chicago. She spent the next 30 years in Idaho where I don't know if there is a single person of Polish descent. My father had taken me to Stanley's years before so I knew that it was truly a sight to behold.
When we walked in her eyes became as large as saucers. From the smoked meats to the deli case I saw her age drop 80 years in mere moments. She was able to speak Polish to the people working there and saw many of her old traditional foods that she had eaten for many years and the prize that we took home was called kishka. No there are certain foods that are tolerable and are labeled Polish especially in Chicago. The kishka that was purchased at Stanley's was the equivalent of golden butter. When that package hit the counter at our house everything else fell from her view as she opened the package, cut it, prepped it, fried it and she ate it with such glee in her eyes it reminded me of an 8-year-old girl eating her first piece of Halloween candy for the evening.
Regardless of your ethnicity, if you want truly delicious food family and atmosphere from the old country, wherever that might be, you will be richly rewarded by visiting this fine...
Read moreI actually waited to write this review. I stopped by 2x last week. My family has ordered from Stanley's since they were at the original location on McDowell Rd for as long as I can remember. So it saddens me to say this place is a hot mess. I'm not even sure where to start. From expired food on the shelves to microwaved pierogi that were practically inedible to a large piece of plastic in my pastrami sandwich, which we found shocking that she missed. I went back a couple of days later to buy frozen pierogi to make at home. Directions clearly state not to microwave, which I had zero plans to do, just stated because that's how they were prepared for us. Honestly, they weren't that good. The owner/manager clearly needs to take all the weird stuff that has zero business in a food establishment, i.e., weird doll like things to random boxes of what look like computer parts or something or close! Someone is going to get sick! Again, this saddens my heart! I hope they choose to clean up the place & acquire proper restaurant equipment to...
Read moreWe went in and the folks eating hot dogs were up at the counter practically begging to know what kind of dog and how it was made. It was 'the best hot dog ever'
I went with the spicy polish sandwich with spicy mustard and a foot long hot italian. My husband said he was transported through his meal. The foot long was huge.
Portions are incredibly generous, they have an amazing staff, everything was made fresh. It's not a subway for sure.
The cook came out to let us know the meat would be a few mins to reach internal temp which I thought was very cool.
Lily helped us and her customer service has 100% locked in a customer. I would highly recommend to anyone looking for a hearty but comforting meal.
Will be back to buy meats and...
