I visited Indian House of Dosa after reading good reviews, and based on my previous experience I expected a similar standard. The food, to be fair, was very good so I have no complaints about that. However the service was extremely disappointing.
I came on a weekday morning with my family, and when we arrived there was no one to welcome or guide us. We seated ourselves and noticed there were no menus available at our table so we had to get one from another. For a moment I even thought the restaurant might be closed as no staff approached us. I then asked another table and they said it was still open.
After about 10 minutes a girl with spectacles (I mention this only to avoid blaming others, since I have seen multiple girls working there on previous visits) finally appeared. But even after coming out she didn’t acknowledge us She just began working on the system while we sat waiting with our order ready.
Another 10 minutes passed and still no one took our order until my son called her. When we asked for three Rava dosas, she said it would take 30–40 minutes. I told her we were okay with that but asked if it could be made quicker since it was already getting late. She bluntly responded saying it would take that long and suggested we order something else if we wanted faster service. We still went ahead and ordered just one Rava dosa mainly because my son really liked it last time. We also ordered two appetizers and dosa.
We finished the appetizers, but even after 30 minutes the Rava dosa hadn’t arrived. I followed up again and she said it would take another 10 minutes. After those 10 minutes she pushed it by another 5. At that point I questioned the delay and her attitude changed. She got defensive saying, “I already told you it would take time and you said okay.” When I mentioned we had also ordered a Mysore Masala dosa she insisted we didn’t, which led to unnecessary arguing.
Meanwhile, the staff kept going in and out, laughing and joking around, which was frustrating to watch while we were waiting hungry. We ended up wasting nearly 1 hour and 30 minutes just for one Rava dosa. My son was upset and suggested we leave. We stayed only because he really wanted the dosa.
In the end, the Rava dosa did taste good, but the attitude and service we received completely ruined the experience. When a restaurant isn’t even busy, there’s no excuse for such delay or poor service. I wouldn't have written such a long message if the server had been professional.
To the management: Please train your staff to prioritize customer service. The behavior we witnessed today staff laughing, playing, ignoring customers was unacceptable. You have now lost three regular customers and I doubt my son would ever want to return. I usually never write reviews but this time I am...
Read moreIf you live or visiting New Jersey and are craving for some authentic south Indian food in New Jersey, you must taste the food at Indian House of Dosas. Don’t be misled by the name and assume that it is only for Dosas. Off course they arr specialists in Dosa. You will find variety of Dosas from plain dosa, masla dosa, mysore masala dosa to cheese dosa etc., but also several other south Indian specialties like Idli, Vada, utappam and poori. Ha! talking about Poori: Poori is served not only with potato curry, but you also will be served with kurma. Their Hyderabad style kurma is mouth watering and am sure you will request for some extra and start licking the fingers.
Most importantly, their service surpasses any other restaurant’s service. Apart from what you find in the menu, you can request for some variations. They will take extra care and prepare the food to your satisfaction. They serve only bottled water keeping the clients health a priority. Talking about health and cleanliness and ambiance, you cannot find any extravagant ambiance, but very clean and neat and peaceful atmosphere, without any loud music or unbearable colors. Regarding cleanliness, I was informed that they power wash the entire restaurant every Monday evening. Hence you will notice the restaurant to be pic and span. Ample lighting and ventilation. Every customer is welcomed with a smile and greeting. The staff is very polite and accommodative. There is one girl named “USHA” who greets the customers and makes them seated comfortably. Orders are served in appropriate amount of time, without rushing or being delayed. All this is possible because of a vibrant girl “Lavanya”, who maintains the pantry and oversees the preparation of food and arranges decoratively on to the trays to be presented the guests. She seldom comes out. But if the guests have any special requests, she is the go to person.
I have to mention that all the credit goes to the restaurant manager “Mr. K.P” short form for Krishna Prasad. I should say that restaurant is attracting customers mainly because of Mr. K. P’s meticulous planning, implementation and development of the restaurant since he joined the establishment several years ago. He welcomes guests with a big smile on his face and treats them Royally.
All that said and done, the bottomline is food is very delicious and authentic South Indian style and the price is right.
I sure recommend this restaurant after consistently being satisfied...
Read moreIndian House of Dosas has been my wife's and my favorite place for South Indian food since 2019. We enjoyed their wide assortment of dosas, their "Raju gari bhojanam" (scrumptious meal on a banana leaf), their novel manchurian dosa, the cleanliness and warm hospitality. Since COViD, we have mostly ordered food via grubhub or Uber eats and never been disappointed by the quality of food they served.
However, today's experience was a rude awkening. While returning home from a doctor's appointment, my wife craved dosas and we stopped at this place. It was as clean as before and we were the only customers when we arrived. My wife ordered a mysore masala dosa and I ordered a rava onion masala dosa, something I had been craving for a long time. They took about 15 minutes to serve the Mysore masala dosa, and as my wife got on with her job, I kept waiting for my rava dosa. I knew rava dosas take more time to make, so I was expecting it to arrive in another 5-7 minutes. But then ten minutes went by. Fifteen. Twenty. My wife, who is typically a slow eater, finished her enormous dosa. People sitting at other tables were being served their dosas. But not me. Both my wife and I frantically waved at the waitress who took our order, multiple times. She never looked. We appeared invisible to her.
After almost 40 minutes I decided it was enough. I walked up to the counter and told the lady that I do not want the dosa anymore. She made a quick enquiry with the kitchen staff and told me that it was being made and tried to explain that rava dosas take a longer time to make. Wait - what - longer time means forty minutes? That too when barely three tables are full in the restaurant?
We cancelled the order and came back. No one seemed to care. Not even a small word of apology. Probably the fact that they did not charge us for the rava dosa was considered enough.
The mysore masala dosa my wife had was still awesome and one of the best she ever had. So absolutely no complaints about the quality of the food. It still remains great. The restaurant is still remarkably clean compared to many of its Indian counterparts, where unfortunately I'll have to search for my rava dosa.
Bye bye Indian...
