I really liked Two Sisters, but I really enjoy this restaurant because it's not only just a pho restaurant!
The majority of Vietnamese restaurants are just really pho restaurants first, with some other dishes you could also get. Pho is the center of the menu for most. However, here, I feel Pho and Roll is unique in a way that it is more than just pho.
They're the only restaurant I've seen so far make the Vietnamese sausage. Some days, it looks like spam. Some days, it looks like a skinless sausage lump. Regardless, it tastes very good. It's very reminiscent of the very sweet Filipino chorizo, or skinless longganisa. As a Filipino American myself seeking for the same sweet sausage, this simple food item makes me keep coming back even if it's for the sentimental factor. It's so good!
They probably make one of the best Vietnamese spring and egg rolls in the area.
Again, I say this with a Filipino bias.... Their egg rolls are very good. Much like the Filipino style egg rolls (lumpia), they are full of meat. And the meat they use is flavorful, like the Filipino counterpart. There are other restaurants where the meat is bland or old. However, Pho and Roll just does it right. They also have shrimp egg rolls (or are they spring rolls...). Also really good.
They add the Vietnamese sausage to their fresh spring roll (Filipinos have a similar thing... fresh lumpia or lumpiang sariwa), which makes their spring rolls unique from the rest of the Vietnamese restaurants in the US, let alone in Pittsburgh. It's just a wonderful and unique addition to the fresh spring roll.
One of their must-get appetizers is their wings. Very unique taste, sweet and lemongrassy with a tinge of fish sauce. And extremely crunchy. If you've been to Pig and the Lady in Honolulu, it's a similar flavor profile! Definitely get this!
On the note of the pho, like Two Sisters, it's a very light soup base. That's not a negative or bad thing. Some people prefer more thick pho. Some like it very thin. Personally, I'm more of a thicker broth (none of Pittsburgh really make it like I want), but theirs is still very good. They have a nice pho flavor that isn't overbearing.
Please come here. They're definitely more than a pho...
Read moreThis was my first time trying Vietnamese food, and I must say it was quite good! The items I tried came in quite good portions, okay prices, and amazing levels of freshness! I tried the vermicelli bowl with Vietnamese sausage, a shrimp egg roll, and sugarcane shrimp, as well as the Thai iced tea.
The portion for the bowl was awesome! It had a great amount of white thin noodles, some sprouts, carrots, and other vegetables. It also came with a tasty and somewhat sweet sauce. I really loved the carrots, which were super vibrant and also a bit sweet. A decent amount of peanuts on the side, too.
The meat was amazing! I've never had sausage quite like this, but I must say it's delicious. Almost a bit more like Canadian bacon than sausage but really good nonetheless. Somewhat sweet once again, but not excessively so. Great texture.
The two shrimp items were really good, too. The egg roll, there wasn't much shrimp in there, but it was crispy and still tasty. Filled with a bit of vegetables, glass noodles, and the like.
The sugarcane shrimp were really good. The texture was very soft on the inside, a bit of crisp on the outside. Juicy and flavorful. It almost didn't feel like they were made of shrimp, though. And, it wasn't that sweet, but it was just really good.
Finally, the Thai iced tea was also very good. It was well balanced, although once again on the sweeter side. The portion was fine for the price. Simple, but well made.
All in all, I would recommend this place. It's a great introduction to Vietnamese food. Although I'm not too familiar with this cuisine, I can say that the food was tasty and fresh. Prices might be a high for some items, but they are...
Read moreI was hankering for pho. I found it. (Scroll down for quick takes.)
Over a Memorial Day lunch, me and another person decided to check out a place that used to be called two sister making Pho.
They did renovations.
The new restaurant is a comfortable space with vaulted ceiling and paper lanterns with soft, warm light that invite you into a den of flavor goodies.
Quick takes, more below Lollipop Shrimp 6/10 Beef and Rice 7/10 Pho 6/10
If you're hungry it's a filling meal. As a regular haunt, they've got decent food.
Besides us, there was one other person when we got there and an 8-top that joined before we filled up.
Location: near the East Liberty Target. Parking: streetside pay meters Ambience: Soft, warm, inviting
This is a nice restaurant. You feel good about having a meal here before you sit down. We had a wall seat that felt and looked clean. We were greeted with two glasses and two bottles of water for ourselves.
I glanced to the right and saw Duck Sauce and Sriracha. I waited about 10 and got hot food that tasted decent, clean, and healthy.
The portions were plump. Shaking Beef with a Fried Egg (try this next time you think of breakfast Steak'n Eggs) and the Fried Shrimp Dumplings on a vegetable skewers.
I filled up to the point of 'I can't even'
Staff was always there at the right time.
I went along with a Pho-focionado who said the Pho has good noodles. The broth is light and it's fairly tasty.
If you go to Target, this place is 5 minutes away and worth a longer walk. Give it a try next time the pangs of hunger roil your gut as you make you way through a Wednesday...
