Old: Great people and food. 5 stars
Updating my review. I have gone here for years, a couple times a month. We knew Jinny by name and my little one was encouraged to taste new items each visit at the sushi bar (until the Chef Shen moved to open a location in Grand Rapids). Now it is under new management. Since then I have gotten a couple take out orders and got home to find a wrong item...expensive mistake, but it can happen. So now we only go when we can eat in.
But, last night I had a really uncomfortable experience in their restaurant. I have been ordering the Shrimp California roll asking to hold the crab and cucumber for a while now. I am happy to pay the same price for less ingredients in the roll. I would even pay more if asked, since this is how my 12 year likes it. Last night they made a big deal after getting the same roll just the prior week for her with no issues. They made the point (2 people) coming over to say it was off menu. When I got my bill, I asked the gentleman to bring over the menu and showed him where it was on the menu and my requested changes to remove 2 elements from the roll. A request that I have made to this roll many times before for my child. I still gave my 20% tip, but think I will try somewhere else for my sushi cravings, which is too bad because the...
Read moreI’ve been going here for years, and at least 3 times since the new management has taken over. This last visit was probably my last. The quality has decreased, but the prices have increased. Specifically, the Japanese menu. I ordered uni, and they cut one piece in half and then sold the 2 nigiri for $19. I just checked the prices online, and they are up to $21. Their bento box chicken teriyaki was tasteless and clearly generic teriyaki sauce, heavy on the starch and MSG. My daughter didn’t even want to finish it. The sashimi pieces are paper thin, and their chirashi is comically overpriced ($34.95) for the portion sizes.
Regarding this last visit, I walked in and was ready to order takeout. The waiter inquired if I needed a menu, and I nodded and replied, “only while I order” then he walked away, leaving me at the entry area. I watched to see if he would come back, but it was obvious he wasn’t. Another waitress approached—because another customer had entered the restaurant, she seated them, then asked if I was ready to order. At that point, I walked out. Never has the staff been so inattentive.
Coupled with the increase in pricing, I can’t imagine coming back. Their other menu items are generic and taste fine. Perhaps if you don’t know any better, you would think it’s a great place. Not...
Read moreCame back for lunch and had the chirashj bowl- WOW. I honestly have not had such good sushi in a while, and I’m a frequent consumer in places like Atlanta, SF, and Nashville. It included such special cuts as Madai and Hirame imported from Japan, and the texture was totally different. Confirmed to me that these people make AUTHENTIC sushi!
I came a few weeks ago on the weekend and tried thejr Himuro- despite serving authentic sushi, this Korean owned establishment also breaks new boundaries of Asian fusion, a term that usually evokes only derision. The himuro was a cold sesame udon topped with chopped sashimi and tempura shrimp?? What even is going on..I liked it though.
The owner (?) even welcomed me back and remembered what I had last time? What a good memory..then he brought out some chicharron the kitchen staff fried out back. This is some amazing service !
Anyway, this strip mall joint has great sushi that is punching way above its weight, and way unexpected for a suburb in...
