The food was quite good. That was the high point.
Unfortunately, I don't know if the management/owners have ever heard the old waiter's adage, "good service can save bad food, but good food can't save bad service."
It's not that the staff was unfriendly ... it's more that the business model just isn't good. It's like dining out at Starbucks.
The staff are all in casual clothes (the girls all dressed like Rachel from Friends), and it's not immediately clear who is working and who is a customer. You're charging higher prices (a little) for higher-end, healthier dining fare ... the staff should look like they work there. They don't need formal attire, but something more professional would be better.
It's all self service, and for a new customer, it's not immediately apparent what you're supposed to do when you walk in. There are menus at the front, but the registers are in the back. You walk in, with no clear lane of travel, wander through the dining room, and go stand in front of a register to order. For $20 a plate, I think I'd prefer a full service restaurant. There were no forks, and I watched one of the Rachels go to the soda/water/silverware/condiment area three times, and still not bring more forks. I had to ask twice.
And the credit card reader asks for a tip when you pay for your food.
Here's my thing about tipping: I apply the CFA/WB Rationalization Model. If the staff isn't going to do more than the staff at Chick-Fil-A or Whataburger, who don't work for tips, then I'm not tipping your staff. Bringing my food I ordered and clearing the table is not tippable service. I'm sorry, it's just not. You have to get your own silverware, your own drinks/refills, and take care of yourself in the restaurant. I don't mind that, but don't ask me for a tip to leave me to serve myself. I'm really tired of the expansion of tipping culture into areas where nothing is being done to earn tips other than the core responsibilities you get paid for.
The service. This was probably the most disappointing part. Again, not unfriendly, but not effective either. My wife ordered coffee (we were there about 90 minutes before close). It took longer for the coffee to come than the food. We watched a couple Rachels wrestle and dance with the coffee maker for about 15 - 20 minutes before they figured out how to use it. At least the coffee was fresh. However, when my wife asked for a second cup (nobody else in the place was drinking coffee, so there should have been more from the fresh pot they brewed for her), Rachel told her she was sorry but they were out. Really? Were they out, or did she just not want to bother getting her a refill?
I hate to say it, but despite the food being good, there really wasn't anything else good about the experience. I'm sad to say, because we wanted it to be good. I guess if you're going for takeout, this would be a decent option. If you want to dine in, not so much. I don't think we'll do that again. We can get pizza and salmon for that price anywhere and get a better...
Read moreMy first Bellagreen experience was 5 stars. Back story is important for representation.I decided to venture out at peak brunch time for my first visit and first experience eating at a restaurant I was unfamiliar with since taking on a transition from long term veganism to a loosely paleo/pescatarian diet due to health. Specifically I wanted salmon cooked for me, I've never had it before out of my own home and am not the hugest fan. I had heard Bellagreen was great for healthy options. Going to a restaurant is super intimidating and frustrating, as I am reminded just how many yummy things I can't have and have to ask a lot of questions! The store was clean, tidy, well appointed, well stocked and full with patrons when I arrived.
Sophia greeted me with the happiest and most willing to help energy, I have a LOT of dietary restrictions and she helped me personalize a (seasonal) Salmon dish taking great concern to know my restrictions and help me avoid them. She also made suggestions on how to get the Salmon prepared since I am unfamiliar with how it should be cooked. She knew the menu, understood the ingredients and was happy to help me have a great meal I can eat without the things I can't. I got the Hawaiian Salmon and made it a salad by adding mixed greens and avocado instead of having the Pineapple Rice and corn it is normally served with. Side of sweet photos fries because they are a brightly colored part of my diet, the more color in my food the better!
When the POS system gave her some trouble, she got Peter (who I believe is a manager) who encouraged her, supported me and helped us tie up the sale quickly and with a very happy energy,
My dish was delivered as requested and quickly even though they are packed! Peter even stopped by the table to check on me and help me download their rewards app, because I will certainly be back. Their staff is present and welcoming, full of smiles and willingness, not a bad attitude in the bunch. At least 4 different people helped me today from Sofia, to Peter, two different servers checking on my as the ran my food or removed empties from my table.
I especially want to call out that this is a scratch cooked cafe, so adjustments and accommodations are welcome and I could really fine tune a meal without feeling like a jerk for asking! If you have restrictions on your diet I feel like you will find the attitude of accommodation and welcomeness here that is harder to find outside your own kitchen!
Also, Their sweet potato fries are advertised as the best and they really are!!! The Salmon was succulent and well cooked in a way I preferred (evidentially I like Medium cooked Salmon , Sofia's suggestion, more then how I had cooked it!)
Thanks Sofia, Peter & Bellagreen Team! I will be back....
Read moreI’ve always been a huge fan of Bellagreen so when we planned a birthday party for my family it only made sense to cater from there to make my family fall in love as well. I had very little time to plan this event so I decided Friday to place a catering order for a Saturday pick up. As Saturday came along, I was on the fence if I had enough food so I called in to add to the order and the staff was so accommodating. When it was time to pick up the order the manager was super kind and helped carry out the order to my car. The entire staff at this location is always happy, smiling, and offer great service, but I think a happy team is a result of great leadership. Eventually I got home and started to set up the food and realized one item was missing. I was short on time because after the birthday party I had to run to a wedding downtown so I couldn’t possibly manage to dedicate time to simply pick up a salad, but I also knew that if I didn’t have the salad I’d be short on food. I called Bellagreen and the team quickly transferred me to the manager who immediately apologized for the oversight and without even asking, requested if he could personally drop off the item. He went above and beyond to drop off the food and also within a short period of time which I was so thankful for.
The service at this location is impeccable! I have dined in and ordered to go several times, but will now also cater regularly as well. I wish I could have remembered the managers name but due to the chaotic day his name has totally slipped my mind.
My family was also absolutely mind blown by the food and personal delivery and I know this meant a lot to my mom and aunt, who we were celebrating.
Below I have some photos of the food. We ordered the Crack chicken, sweet potato mash, roasted veggies, quinoa salad, sweet potato fries, spinach dip, and a full...
