Texas 2024: Destination #29 Fat Ni BBQ
The little people wanted to eat meat on the sticks. I ordered one of lamb, chicken with bone, chicken, hearts, bacon wrapped enoki mushroom skewers, and a grilled chicken. The meat skewers were all tender.
The problem is that my kids and I detest the spices of the dry rub used and all the freaken skewers and grilled chicken had the same meat rub with all those spices that's similar to the spices in Indian cuisines as well. No offense to the lovers. I identified the smell of coriander seeds and fennel seeds in the meat rub.
Grilled chicken was not meaty nor tender at all. They use the "stew hen" or "old stew hen" type of chicken for grilling. (For us home chefs who cooks with this chicken know how chewy and bony stew hen is.) It was torture for my kids. With the disliked mixtures of herbal spices my kids and I are not fond of didn't make the eating experience any better.
Service: Ordering was stressful since the lady server does not speak English. Although she has a friendly smile but me trying to speak English and she trying to speak Chinese ain't going to work out any problem. I tried to ask her if I can order two chicken heart skewers with none of the funky spices. She couldn't understand me until I asked a Chinese speaking mom who was there with her family to help me translate. Thank goodness for that Mom who helped. My two kids finally had something they could eat and enjoy. I guess if you can't speak Chinese, you won't be able to benefit the service if the server doesn't understand or speak English well.
Note: All the meat skewers have lemongrass rubbed on it as well. Pictured are my kids happily and satisfied with their tender chicken heart skewers with a light salty taste but none of the restaurant's funky herbal spices. I hope choices of different marinade or dry spice rubs to be an option on the ordering menu in the future.

Read moreAbsolutely terrible experience. This was hands down one of the worst restaurant visits I’ve ever had.
First of all, the server was constantly on their phone talking during our meal — completely ignoring our table. We had to ask multiple times for basic condiments like cilantro and scallions, and they still forgot. No apology, no urgency — just pure negligence.
Second, the attitude was shockingly rude. We were a group of four, and they forced a mandatory tip on us without any notice. When we questioned it, the server literally said, “I’m charging it, so what?” — unbelievably arrogant and unprofessional.
We also asked for one portion of cabbage and two sesame sauces. They brought two cabbages and one sesame sauce — then tried to charge us for both cabbages and refused to admit their mistake. When we asked to speak to a manager or the owner, they bluntly said, “There isn’t one.” What kind of business behaves like this?
The entire experience felt like a scam. Horrible service, dishonest billing, and zero accountability.
What’s even more heartbreaking is that this used to be a restaurant I genuinely liked. I still remember the photos on the wall — the owner himself used to go table to table, asking customers how the food and service were, and what could be improved. That level of care is long gone.
I will personally warn everyone I know to stay far away from this location, even though their service in Carrollton used to be decent. One star is too generous. You deserve zero. With staff this rude, dishonest, and incompetent, your downfall is not just likely —...

Let me start by saying I’m usually a very generous tipper — I always appreciate good service. But this place was something else.
Three of us came in for dinner. The total bill, including tax, came to $120. The restaurant doesn’t offer table service — you order everything yourself. The only thing the server did was bring the food to our table. That’s it.
She gave us just two cups for three people, and we had to get our own drinks, straws. The food was very salty She didn’t offer to refill water until we were literally getting ready to leave — and there were only four tables of customers in the whole place. When I needed a to-go box, I had to go up and get it myself.
When it came time to pay, I tipped $12 — again, keep in mind the service was minimal. Before I even finished writing, she said, “We usually get 18% tips,” then added, “You should at least give 15%.” I was shocked. This is the first time I’ve ever had a server directly and rudely demand a specific tip amount.
Sorry, but with that kind of service, I’d be well within reason to leave no tip at all. I know times are tough for restaurants, but being pushy and entitled about tips is completely unacceptable. I won’t be coming back — and I’ll be letting my friends know to stay away as well.
Bottom line: poor service, salty food, and an awkward,...
