We tried Fat Oyster for the first time this past Friday for dinner and it was fantastic! The place was fairly empty when we first got there at about 6:30, but I was happy to see that it started to fill up soon after. We were given a menu with specials on it and there was a chalkboard with some Happy Hour information, but we mostly ordered off of their main menu. Our idea was to order several different entrees and to share so that everyone got a taste of everything.
I ordered the Cerithidea Obtusa (sea snail) with coconut juice (#18), the Sweet Snail with Butter Sauce (#13) and the Steamed Clams Thailand Style (#05). My brother ordered the Grilled Big Clams with Green Onion & Peanut (#06), Grilled Big Squid with Salty Chili (#33) and the Grilled Chicken Feet (#35). My less adventurous mother and sister-in-law each ordered the Fried Pork & Vegetable Dumplings (#A6) and also shared an order of Eggrolls (A3).
My absolute favorite dish of the evening was the Cerithidea Obtusa with coconut juice. They’re a little different because you have to suck the meat out of the shell, but it was well worth it. The snail meat was clean, tender and flavorful and it was nicely complimented by the coconut juice sauce. The Sweet Snail with Butter Sauce was also very clean and tasty – it was a little more chewy, but not in a bad way – and the Butter Sauce was delicious. I thought that the Steamed Clams Thailand Style was good, but in comparison to other dishes it wasn’t very flavorful and needed more of a kick of spices. However, I did share those with my mom, and they were perfect for her. The Grilled Big Clams with Green Onion and Peanuts were cooked perfectly, and the flavor combination was great. My brother’s favorite dish – and my 3rd favorite after the 2 snail entrees – was the Grilled Big Squid with Salty Chili. The squid was tender, and the salty chili sauce was just the right combo of flavor and heat. I think the least successful of the dishes were the chicken feet, but only because they’re not very meaty and are a little difficult to eat – the cook and seasoning on them was good.
We will definitely come back to Fat Oyster, and I will highly recommend it to people. I think that the menu is large and varied enough that there is something for everyone. Everything that we ordered came out perfectly cooked...
Read moreI had high hopes for Fat Oysters, but my experience was a major letdown. First off, the service was painfully slow. With only one server for the entire restaurant, our food and drinks took forever to arrive, and server only came if you flagged them down.
When it came to the food, the dishes looked nothing like the photos or portion on the menu. I will say, the oysters were fresh and juicy. Grilled chicken feet was very dry and burnt. Steamed clams were lacking flavor and portion. Shrimp head off was TINY, but the garlic butter flavor was decent. Grilled squid was tiny, shriveled and super dry. Catfish platter looked nothing like the menu photo and fries were under fried. After all the dishes came out, we waited over 25 another minutes waiting for our orders of grilled mussels to come out. When we flagged down the server to ask about them, we were told they ran out, yet they never informed us until we asked about it. They also tried to charge us from the mussels that were never sold. Overall, the food was just mediocre at best, and the portions were shockingly tiny for the price.
BEWARE!! We were hit with a gratuity charge on our bill, despite being a party of 5. The receipt clearly stated that gratuity only applied to groups of 6 or more. It felt like a sneaky practice and it left a bad first impression.
After paying for the bill and leaving, server ran out and accused our party of not paying for our bill. We showed him the receipt and he ran inside, and back out and apologized there was a system lag.
Overall, I can’t recommend Fat Oysters. With slow service, underwhelming food, and questionable billing practices, there are definitely better options out there. Save your...
Read moreIt pains me a bit to write this review but hopefully this is used by the business to improve and this restaurant has a lot of potential. We were in the area and wanted to try a new restaurant, after researching a bit we found Fat Oyster which is an Asian style spin on various seafood dishes.
Let’s start off with the positive. The service was great, attentive and overall friendly staff in which we were seated quickly. We first got the baked oyster which was the highlight of the entire experience as you just can’t beat butter, green onion, and sweet oyster flavors.
Moving onto the crawfish, we asked if it was live and they confirmed it was indeed. The price was pretty low and we went for it. Boy were we disappointed, it was indeed tasted like dead and frozen crawfish which for the first time in years I couldn’t finish it. 2/10 rating on this dish.
We then got the the most unique dish which is this family style, hot pot, full of meat, cheese, eggs, tons of oysters and random other ingredients. The one ingredient which made this pretty awful was some kind of cocktail red sauce which just made everything together taste quite funky. The meat was clearly of low quality and overall we couldn’t finish this dish at all. It has too much going on there and unfortunately another dish we couldn’t finish. They did give an abundance of oyster meat which was a huge plus. 3/10 rating.
Overall we probably won’t be back and always love supporting Vietnamese restaurant but they clearly have a lot to improve on where dropping $80 for two people we were very disappointed. Wish nothing but the best and hopefully the restaurant improves...
