Great food! Fresh ingredients. Good service.
We relocated here (DAL/NTX) from Illinois over 3 years ago. Chinatown in Chicago has always been a destination for my wife and I when we go to downtown Chicago. We've never found a good Chinese restaurant since we moved here that would equal or at least be up to par to the restaurants in Chicago. At least not until we dropped by Zhang's out of "necessity" a little over a month ago.
First of all, let me comment about the place. It is clean unlike most of the restaurants that we have been to. They have a good offering in their menu to accomodate one's palate.
It was past 12:00 noon and we were starving. We were looking for Chinese food. Having experienced "mediocre at best" so-called Chinese restaurants here, we were preparing for the worst. They have DINE-IN special for $23.95 where you choose three ( yes, three (3)!) dishes from their specials menu. We ordered Salt & Pepper Egplant, Chicken with Mixed Vegetables and Roast Pork. We were really skeptical and expecting itty-bitty portions. Boy, were we surpised. The servings were good size servings (enough for three or four people). There were chunks of meat (not small slices or shredded) in the dish and the ingredients were fresh. Unlike other restaurants, the dishes do have distinct flavors.
They also have dimsum. The selection is not as extensive compared to some Chinese restaurants we've been to, but they are good.
I would like to comment (not necessarily bad) on several things: First, they do not have linen for table cloth. They put a wide sheet of paper in place of a table cloth. I think the logic is that it is easier for them to remove the paper and discard it after each meal rather than spend money on laundry.
If you are a rice eater and consume a lot of it (like some Asians do), be forewarned. They give you a very small portion (a small cup) of rice. If you ask for additional rice they will charge you for it. So, if you are hungry or starving, and you think you're going to consume more than a cup of rice, you are better off ordering fried rice from the menu.
We've been going there since then. Zhang's is the only place that is as close to the real Chinese food that we had back in IL. It is now our go-to place for Chinese food.
UPDATE: 06/29/2018 - The paper "table cloth" had been replaced on most of the tables with plastic ones.
We had Mongolian Beef and Beef Lo Mein. The Mongolian Beef was not on top of a bed of "exploding" rice noodles like I am used to and the Lo Mein was just a wee bit oily for me.
In all fairness though, there are so many versions/interpretations of Mongolian Beef. Some come with, and some come without the noodles. As far as oiliness is concerned, it all boils down to preference. What may be a wee bit oily to me, was just perfect for my wife. Regardless of preferences, both were exceptional dishes. As always everything was fresh.
I wish they would've given some dessert or something sweet after the meal like most restaurants we've been to. A small slice of fruit (ex: orange) or a fortune cookie would've been nice.
Otherwise, it was still a great dining experience. I'm looking forward trying other dishes...
Read moreCame here for the dim sum. The food was alright, nothing spectacular. I’m too used to the Dim Sum places back in California so that’s what I am comparing to.
We got the following items: Chrysanthemum tea, Stuffed eggplant with shrimp, BBQ pork rice noodles, Fried dough stick rice noodles, Turnip cake, Phoenix claws, Beef short ribs, Egg custard, Sui Mai, Fried meat dumpling, and lastly the eight treasures rice in lotus leaf.
The Phoenix claws is the literal translation and it’s the red chicken feet. It tasted good and was flavorful.
The stuffed eggplant with shrimp was also good. Fried shrimp mixed into the eggplant.
The bbq pork rice noodle was okay. The bbq pork didn’t have much flavor. It did come out steaming hot though, so at least it was freshly made.
The fried dough stick rice noodles was good. The fried dough stick was nice and crunchy. It should’ve been paired with a sweet soy sauce in my opinion.
The turnip cake didn’t have much ingredients in it unlike other places I’ve been to.
The eight treasures rice in lotus leaf was pretty good. Peanuts inside so make sure you’re not allergic.
Overall, the food was okay. It’s better than the other Dim Sum place we went to in Frisco. This restaurant was also very busy even at 2pm on a Sunday. Also seems to attract a variety of people so to me this place must be doing a...
Read moreI'm Chinese by the way. We have been to many dim sum restaurants and have our favorites, but we are going to add this to our favorite list!
First thing that hits me is how new and clean the place is. The paper menu is beautiful and clearly lists out all the prices of each item you are ordering -- wonderful!
Food is great! -- the water chestnut cake (DS2) -- omg the best I have had. Please order. These are normally steamed and come in small, square pieces. But 3 wonderfully large pieces came and crispy-pan fried! -- steamed beancurd skin rolls (DM14) -- my husband was like OMG THESE FINALLY HAVE MEAT IN THEM, like they should -- the pork ribs doesn't have taro in them!! (DM16). I love the taro, but my husband likes getting more meat for the same order, as taro are normally in there as fillers. (All the other dim sum restaurants normally put taro so they fill up 1/4 or 1/3 of an order) -- chicken feet taste great!! -- hargow and siew mais are nice!!
We also ordered a salted fish and chicken fried rice to try...and its SOO GOOD -- highly recommend to order.
WE ARE COMING BACK!!!
Ps: only 1/3 of the restaurant was occupied, meaning there's no wait and it's a relaxing and nice experience. I sure hope more will come find this gem of a place in the...
