As a ramen aficionado I was very excited to try this local ramen bar. However, it really missed the mark. I gave two stars because it’s not terrible, but severely lacking in quality control. I had the spicy tonkontsu ramen, fried rice with chicken, shrimp+chicken bao buns, and the passion fruit green tea. Service was OK, but nothing spectacular. Server was not attentive, but wasn’t a huge issue as we are very low-key. But refills would have been nice, they just never came by to ask. The atmosphere and clean environment is what hits the first two stars, but the food is lackluster and poorly executed.
Noodles: undercooked (like just dumped in the bowl raw) Chicken: undercooked (literal chicken blood on the plate) Broth: Luke-warm (really disappointing) Bamboo shoots: overcooked with a weird taste. Pork: overcooked. Eggs: raw egg whites, and cold. Shrimp bao bun: drenched in eel sauce. Passion fruit green tea was a really odd mix. Not sure I’d do it again. The tapioca bubbles likewise had a distinctive odd flavor that was off-putting.
At $20 for a bowl of ramen (with $2 for the extra egg), I expected MUCH better. Unfortunately, it’s a rip-off. It’s just not good ramen. $10 for corn is obscenely ridiculous. I’d gladly pay $20 for a bowl of GOOD ramen, but the food here is just so underwhelming I legit feel ripped off.
Message to the owner: please let me know when you’ve corrected this quality control issue and I will be glad to come back to rate again.
1st update:
I stopped in again (without owner’s knowledge) to try out the “happy hour” deals and had a better experience, but still have some comments about the food.
I had the spicy tonkutsu noodles again and noticed that the broth was much hotter than it was previously. However, although the noodles appear to have been steamed a little longer than before and were at least “al dente” this time around, the noodles were still a little undercooked.
The pork was once again over cooked and dry, but the eggs were done nicely.
I tried the passion fruit green tea again as well, but this time without the tapioca bubbles. It was a world of a difference. Much much better without the tapioca, which is uncharacteristic for me because I usually really enjoy tapioca bubbles.
I also tried the corn at happy hour pricing, and while it wasn’t bad, for me personally it is still not worth the $10 standard price.
I upgraded this from 2 to 3 stars however, as the experience the second time around was okay. You can look through my review history and notice that I am fairly generous with my ratings and rarely give less than 5 stars, but the food here still misses the marks on so many levels that it’s just not anything special to...
Read moreWe are so delighted with Zuru Ramen Bar - Plantation ❤️ . We ordered appetizers, entrees and a boba tea. For appetizers, we got gyoza, Korean wings, and calamari - the calamari was the winner for me. It was soooo delicious, fresh, lightly fried, crispy and just all around my favorite dish of the night. Do note that these were tentacles, not squid rings so just FYI, it didn't bother me though.
For our entrees, we got the rice and noodles to try a variety of dishes - we got mazesoba, yuzu ramen, chashu pork don, and spicy tonkotsu ramen, all were amazing. Their chashu pork was tender and soft, they marinate their meats very well and their broth is absolutely creamy and well made.
I also got their brown sugar boba tea which was good. Usually boba teas are a hit or miss at restaurants but I am happy with their teas.
The restaurant was clean and well decorated! They have a super cute alleyway that leads you to the bathroom but it gives you a little moment of Japan
Lastly, the service was impeccable. Two waitresses were helping us and they were so quick and attentive. I believe one of the ladies might be the manager, her name is Nuch, and she was amazing! She walked us through every dish and explained the process of the ramen was made and was super passionate.
Overall, this place is a thumbs up. With their wide selection of noodles, rice dishes, drinks (alcoholic and non alcoholic), and appetizers, you will find something to enjoy at...
Read moreIf I could give this 0 stars I absolutely would to be real with you, I ordered the black garlic ramen and to start with the noodles are literally the same as the ramen package that you boil at home, very fake noodles, the bamboo shoots are absolutely disgusting, the broth has no flavor. I ordered two ramens and neither were marked lol so we had to detective which was which , thank God one was spicy so they were slightly different colors. I ordered an extra thing of Pork Chasu, or what was supposed to be pork Chasu- $4 extra, which is fine because they said it'd be 3 OR 4 pieces lol not a set amount which is insane but whatever I paid the extra $4 for it. I asked for it to be on the side so that way I can see how many pieces come in the actual ramen, then when I went to pick it up the first thing they say is they forgot to put it on the side and the bag was stapled LOL I got 5 pieces in total and 4 out of the 5 were fat, complete fat (if you zoom into the photo you can see that I'm not even exaggerating lol) I left 2 to throw out I tried to eat it but I just couldn't. An absolute let down, $48 just wasted. This place was highly recommended to me by several people and Lord do I feel bad for those people who haven't gotten to experience real authentic ramen, because this is not it. Not even close. Would love the money back, especially considering I didn't even...
