Let's talk about decisions... (from the perspective of a professional chef). A friend and I came to Plymouth from the outer Cape for a performance at Plymouth Memorial Hall. Traveling for 2+ hours to get to the performance venue, left us no time (nor desire) to eat at home. Not knowing the area very well, I did a google search of "restaurants in the area" - So many wonderful looking establishments with seeming great menus. My date is a little picky, and certainly is not fond of Seafood which eliminated so many options. I therefore refined my search to "Italian restaurants in the area". After carefully perusing each menu, I made a decision that Mamma Mia's would be just right. Although there is an online vehicle for making a reservation - I chose to call the restaurant to secure my seats with a live person. I was concerned that we might arrive late (or early) and wanted to have a clear understanding with the booker. Right from the get go - my experience was super positive. The person with whom I spoke on the phone was not only professional, but also understanding of my concern, and super helpful in making the reservation and assuaging my worry. So - we arrive for dinner (made it on time) - it was the evening of MANY simultaneous events in Plymouth. Lighting of a holiday tree, some kind of running road race and of course, the event at the "Hall". The restaurant was FULL! this made me even more grateful for the phone call and kind help of the restaurant's representative. We were quickly seated, then greeted by a very sweet server Nathalie (I believe), and proceeded to make food selections. Nathalie was very patient - even on a super busy night - with my high maintenance idiosyncratic requests. Service was quick and attentive, yet not overbearing nor fumbling.
And now for the food experience. I had a quick appetizer - the Lobster and Seafood Stuffed Quahog, a (not so) small house salad, and a personal favorite (and my standard to "judge" the integrity of an Italian restaurant). Well - up to this point - I have been a bit effusive and verbose, well now - I'm gonna cut straight to the chase. PHENOMENAL! This food was beyond my belief. I LOVED the Quoahog, The salad was perfect, and the spaghetti and meatballs - well... it's 9 am (the next morning) as I pen this review, and - - - my leftovers have finally come to full temperature - and I'm ready for round 2. Note: I actually put this leftover spaghetti and meatballs in a pan on the stove to reheat - because - I thought this food (as we as I) deserved the best possibly quality return visit. I am ready to eat now, so this review will come to a quick end.
My biggest disappointment is that I live 2 hours from this amazing establishment, and can't repeat this experience more frequently. I have already told two friends about this place ad nauseam to them, i''m sure.
I don't take pictures in restaurants of food or the surroundings because I like to be more present with whomever I am with, that fact does not reflect on my extraordinary satisfaction with Mamma Mia's food and operation. I can't wait for when I can return, but more so - I can't wait to consume my breakfast! Spaghetti & Meatballs, take 2 - here I come!
edit: after reading some other reviews - I'd like to comment on people's comments about the price / value - People - you cannot come to a tourist location where the costs of doing business - and that includes electricity, gas, food, - paying fair wages in an employee's market - where there are more jobs than workers - property taxes - just to name a few - and think that the price will rival your small town restaurant - or even big city restaurant prices. you are comparing apples to watermelons. I'll bet the price at Mamma Mia's is comparable (or even less) than much of it's local competition (just an...
Read moreThis was the single worst dining experience I have ever had. We placed our order quickly after being seated and waited 45+ minutes for our food. We had pieces of bread and packets of butter literally tossed onto our table after being handled without gloves during a pandemic. My water glass was covered in white spots. I asked for it to be replaced, which took 20 minutes. Our waitress had her mask below her nose the entire time and kept touching it. I ordered ziti, shrimp and broccoli with parmesan and alfredo for $18.99. I was served penne with no seasoning or parmesan with no salt and pepper on the table. The broccoli was clearly frozen. The shrimp had zero seasoning and also appeared frozen. I could have made this meal myself. I did that night, for $5.43.
I told the busser that my dish was supposed to be ziti, he argued that the penne on my plate was ziti. He picked it up without asking and started to walk away. I told him I didn't have another hour to spend there and he dropped it back on my table, again, in a pandemic. Our waitress came by 15 minutes later (first time checking on us) and she, too, argued that my penne was ziti. She told me they "didn't even have penne." My friend and I both had penne on our plates. My friend's came in a bowl that was a total mess, with pasta and sauce spilling out over the sides in a watery soup-like sauce with no seasoning or taste.
Our waitress said she'd talk to a manager. 20 minutes later she came back and complained that her manager was arguing with her. Eventually, the manager came and just tossed the bill on our table and walked away - no apology, zero respect. We immediately put a credit card in, eager to get out of there. We arrived hungry and now were starving since we did not get to eat. The manager walked away. Then walked right by again. Didn't take our check. We waited 20 minutes, nothing. We went downstairs to try to pay where the manager was chatting with other guests. She was extremely rude to us and again offered no apology. Another server heard us complain and laughed at us! The lack of respect from the manager and this insult from the other server was so unbelievably disrespectful and upsetting.
This was our first visit to Plymouth and our visit to Mamma Mia's ruined an otherwise perfect weekend. Not only was this upsetting, stressful and disappointing,...
Read moreMy amazing girlfriend recently told me about a tradition that she and one of her boys had, of going to this Mamma Mia's (MM), and ordering a specific meal once a week.
I had only been to the MM in Carver, and based on Not Great experiences, vowed to not ever return. That said, my girlfriend is - as mentioned above - amazing, and her story quite sweet, so I was totally willing to give this Plymouth location a try.
Before going, I read Jim W.'s review of MM, so I felt prepared. His review is spot-on.
This place is loud and family-friendly and ... quite good.
Evan was our waiter and he walked a great line between attentiveness and giving us time to ourselves.
My girl ordered her usual meal - which delighted me - and I ordered the chicken parm with a salad because ... chicken parm.
Mine was good! And, more importantly, my girl enjoyed hers. And, we both had leftovers from a good meal at a fair price.
In terms of the ambiance, yes, it was loud and crowded, and yes, the family behind us (I think one of them ordered a Bailey's Margarita which caused me physical pain) and I had to negotiate space, but when you walk in understanding that, you're ready.
Also, whoever the dude was making pizza in the kitchen was a hit. There was a table of three women who were advanced in years sitting near us who thoroughly enjoyed his show, and he came out to meet them and thank them and wish them well. That's just awesome.
So yes, if you're hungry for decent food and sharing space and are okay with a little loudness, then you should definitely come here. And I mean that sincerely; there's something honest and heartfelt about this place which I really like, and ... we...
