As I looked though the restaurant options in the area I stumbled upon a restaurant called “Sinner’s Steakhouse”. I browsed the reviews one stood out. There was a 5 star review by a gentleman named Nick and what stood out was when they said that they usually hold 5 stars for Michelin starred restaurants, but they had such a great experience that I felt I should bring my family.
At first we did not know if it was even open, but dinner hours start at 3pm and it was 2:45 and overcast/misty so it made sense that it wasn’t full.
The mgr and host were super pleasant, she took notice immediately my parents were deaf and mentioned she studied a little ASL and said hello to my parents, they felt welcomed and super grateful that someone was able to communicate with them, a simple hello or thank you means the world to them.
The gentleman who took care of us, Alex, was very charming. All smiles, and had an aura of hospitality you usually only see in fine dining and hospitality focused restaurants. His bright mile and attitude gave us Immediate comfort.
Ive treated myself and my family to Michelin starred restaurant experiences, and am very familiar with the level of service required, and I have to say that my experience here (aside from some minor attention to detail) was on par with some of the best restaurants I have ever visited.
The wine list was the first thing I looked at, and their options were great. Excellent options from many regions and as someone training to be a sommelier I was happy, I ordered a Pinot Noir from Oregon and it was phenomenal.
Apps: Trio Dip, Raw Bar oysters, Oysters Oregenato, Lobster Bisque, Lamb Chops, Seafood Ceviche. Every single item we ordered was great.
Dinner: Salmon, Halibut, filet mignon, scallops, Brussel sprouts. The filet I had there was on par with Brandt Beef!
One of the gentlemen working as a busser noticed we were taking a selfie and offered to assist.
After dinner we ordered the cheesecake, not only because I love cheesecake, but also because Alex also works the kitchen and I was very impressed with the homemade whipped cream and strawberries.
Throughout our dining experience the restaurant filled up and was full by the time we left, which was great to see since we were the first and only table when we came in which made us feel unsure of our decision to dine there at first.
Right after dining we took a nice long walk around the shore (literally right outside), we soaked in some sunshine and watched the locals fish and enjoy the shore during our digestive walk around the restaurant perimeter.
I made sure to let Alex know this is one of the best dining experiences I’ve ever had in NJ.
Phenomenal.
Now, the ONLY negatives I have to mention (nobody’s perfect, can’t improve unless you know where you need improvement)
Lobster Bisque was a touch too salty, parents are very health conscious, but we all shared one and it was delicious.
Oysters and ceviche were served without spoons. (which wasn’t an issue really but I only mention it because I think this place is very close to reaching levels other restaurants only dream of)
Table wasn’t crumbed/wiped in between apps and dinner, and again I apologize for nitpicking but this is a service standard that is easy to execute and would elevate this location above and beyond others.
Dessert was served without utensils initially, but a young lady nearby noticed immediately as it was served and had them on the table before we even had to think of asking, which showed me there is a team mentality and they watch each others backs when it comes to service.
I couldn’t be happier with my experience, I’ve never been to point pleasant and this is now my destination spot for everytime I visit my parents in Tom’s River.
For anyone looking for a place for an excellent and not so costly dining experience in this area, you CANNOT GO WRONG here. Absolutely thrilled that I came here and will absolutely return.
Thank you Alex and thank you to the staff for providing such an excellent...
Read moreUnfortunately I had a very mixed experience at this restaurant. First, after a long wait after ordering, My $105 porterhouse steak was terribly overcooked. It was funny because just before they brought the steak, I mentioned to my date that was taking a very long time to "not cook" my steak 😊 as I ordered it Pittsburgh rare. When it finally arrived at the table, it was medium-well done. Almost no trace of pink whatsoever. I have photographs. To be honest, even top steak restaurants can get this wrong from time to time. But when they do, they normally compensate in some way. I don't mind either way as long as the steak is recooked and it's what I asked for. I would expect maybe a free dessert or a beer on the house, some sort of nod that they made a mistake and instead of enjoying my meal with my dining partner I had to sit and wait. There was a wait while apparently my overcooked steak needed approval to be recooked. The manager said there was no doubt the steak was overcooked and they came back to the table after 5 or 10 minutes to let me know that would happen. By now my date had finished her dinner and was sitting there waiting for me to get my dinner. But what happened next to something that a top steak restaurant would normally not do… instead of delivering to my table properly cooked porterhouse, they brought me a T-bone steak. Now while a Porterhouse in a T-bone are similar, they are not the same. The department of agriculture has a very clear rule that discerns between the two. So first they cooked the correct steak the wrong way, then they cooked the wrong steak the correct way. All I was looking for was the correct steak cooked the correct way. Since it was cooked perfectly, I could have forgiven them if at least they gave me a discount or comped the steak entirely. That's what any good steakhouse would do. But what they did next was something I could not have anticipated… The manager came over to argue that a porterhouse steak and a t-bone steak were the same! Normally when I go out to dinner, I'm not buying food. I'm not even buying cooked food. I could do that at ShopRite or Costco. What I'm doing is I'm paying for an experience. Generally, that experience should never include an argument with the staff. Even if somehow I was wrong, and the steak was marginally a porterhouse and not a t-bone, I would expect an apology and a dessert or drink and not an argument to further ruin a disastrous meal. But that's what I got. I will admit in the end that the manager did relent and acknowledge that a t-bone and porterhouse were not the same, and in fact he served me a t-bone. That acknowledgment was not reflected in my bill at all. I would have been well within my legal rights to refuse to pay for it. But I did not want to further ruin the evening. So if you're looking for a pleasant evening eating a properly cooked steak at a reasonable price, I would recommend going to a place like longhorn for a similar quality, or one of the many other nearby steak restaurants for high quality. Shelling out over $100 for an improperly cooked steak, then a properly cooked incorrect steak, is not my idea of good business practices. And it's too bad, because they did cook the steak the second time the correct way. And it was delicious except for the fact it was the...
Read moreTo put this simply, this was the sixth time at this establishment. I've had nothing but great experiences until this last one. I have never had a worse experience in such a restaurant.
The bread they brought out was so hard, that it could break teeth. The butter was tasteless. How difficult is it to have soft warm bread? I honestly missed the old bread that came with 3 different options of dipping sauces, which is what I expected based on previous experiences. Guess not. It was just hard bread & tasteless whipped butter.
We ordered Calamari, it was overcooked. The crispy breading of the calamari just peeled off into the tasteless sauce that came with it. Couldnt even dip calamari correctly. There was still full chunks of tomatoes or peppers within the sauce. Chunks bigger than some pieces of calamari. That was a turnoff immediately. WORST OF ALL the calamari tasted as if someone dropped the entire salt container into the fryer. That calamari had enough salt to choke a horse. My wife & I had to chase the salt with water. Maybe should've used that extra salt in your butter.
My wife oredered the Salmon & I ordered the the Cowboy Steak, I requested it to be medium+. The waitress said the kitchen couldn't accommodate that. " it's either medium or medium-well". Which still I can't wrap my head on. Does the Chef not understand core temps of his higher end cut steaks? They steak & salmon came out roughly 20 mins later. By this time we recovered from the dreadful calamari only to experience horrid steak & salmon. The steak was garnished with some fine cut veggie that was difficult to remove, as it was stuck to another plop of tasteless butter. The steak was cooked well done to point that the bone was charred black. My wife had to tell me that my lips were smeared black from the char from the steak. As well as the mashed potatoes that came with Salmon were so salty that it made the ocean jealous. More than once I found myself crunching on bead size pieces of salt.
Waitress was kind, but to the Point of excess. I can understand stopping once right before the meal as it comes out & after we've finished. The wait staff should be able to read the room & keep their head on a swivel looking & scanning for their assistance needed rather than interrupting the customer mid meal or mid sip of wine. As well as the suited fellow from the front door made his rounds. It was as if I couldnt celebrate a valentines day/anniversary dinner with my wife. Continously being interrupted during a meal is rough.
We had 2 sides, potato croquettes & roasted mushrooms. Both were sub-par. The roasted mushrooms had no flavor other than shroom & were definitely under cooked. The potato croquettes were mushy as if they were a microwaved hot pocket with paramesan cheese just sprinkled on top.
I did inform the waitress at the end of the night of the saltiness that was extremely prevalent. We even watched another customer turn their plate away for the exact thing. I don't know if the bussiness is under new management or the head chef was off this night. Whatever the case is I couldn't find anything that could excuse the night & food I experienced. 16 year anniversary/ Valentines day goes into our memory as the worst dinner EVER!...
