Two stars because the food isn't disgusting. It's just very underwhelming, and I know of plenty other tastier, more pleasant options with better service and more inviting restaurant dining for the same price range not far from there.
If you like pho, I would rather have an experience at Pho 79 across the street in Jefferson Commons if I were in the mood for a noodle soup bowl. I would love to have a good Ramen place like Kappo Nara in Norfolk, but this is not even good for the price which isn't that cheap. I'm not sure how this place is still open. Maybe their hibachi take out is pretty good for price? I don't know. My sushi was ok but tiny. Perhaps my expectations were a little too high because I thought of it as a Japanese restaurant which in my experience is usually a cleaner experience all around. The inside was designed to look nice, but it's walls are a little cluttered now and it feels and smells more like a hot dirty dingy Chinese hole in the wall restaurant which would be fine if they served cheap and yummy food. Again, for the same price, I would rather go to any other Chinese restaurant.
I came here when they first opened so it's been a couple of years and I was not impressed enough to go back. I know it seems petty, but one of the biggest turn-offs was the plastic spoons. I ordered a seafood ramen and I thought it had no flavor. Husband's hibachi wasn't something you'd order again.
I decided to give them a try tonight realizing they've been here a while so maybe that was just opening stuff and they've gotten better since.
I also usually give people the benefit of the doubt and never want to offend anyone, but as soon as I walked in the door, with just one or two customers at 7 on a Tues., and an unfriendly staff, I really just wanted to get out of there. I stayed an ordered a Ramen bowl that was a little tastier than my first. They are still using plastic ware. The meat had a good amount of gristle on it and I didn't love that. I'm not used to pickled or salted eggs. The hard boiled egg was prepared some kind of way that I didn't expect. Perhaps I miss read the menu. Not sure. It looked and tasted unappetizing to me.
I don't expect hole in the wall walking in, but that's what it feels like. Not the good kind where they have yummy food that's worth dealing with the other stuff. If they do, it's hard to find and after two visits, I don't intend to go back a third time to find...
Read moreThis is my first time eating at Volcano. I ate there with my daughter and two grandchildren, today, 10/05/25, we ate lunch. I had the 3 sushi rolls, the rolls were good not excellent. I ordered miso soup as well, it was served warm, not hot. Just a Luke warm soup. My issue was not the food but the cold, disrespectful, and the lack of customer service. As my family and I entered we were greeted by the coldest, and almost non verbal Asian female. She looked at my daughter as if she was irritating her when my daughter asked, if the dining area was available, given her experience prior, a time when dining in was not an option. Her service was the worst. She took our order, gave us our food one ready dish at a time did not smile didn't talk, didn't follow up if our food was OK. Then, after giving us our food one ready dish at a time she basically tossed the plastic utensils on the table. This host/waitress made us feel unwanted, probably because we are brown. My daughter talked to her after in private to bring to her attention her rudeness and her overall disrespectful demeanor. According, to my daughter all she said was"I knuw." Lastly, The restaurant itself lacks personality, joyful energy and good vibes. We ate there today, 10/05/25...
Read moreIGNORE THESE HATE COMMENTS!!! I've been going to volcano since they first open up. Now the reason why the rice on the sushi is warm not cold is because they cooked it straight out of the rice maker. They don't keep their rice in fridge and make it cold. Nah you can see for yourself they scoop it out of the rice maker. The guy that makes sushi wear gloves. Believe me I've seen it every time he makes my sushi. Dont believe me? How about you look at it for yourself and dont assume. Speaking of assuming, y'all crazy if you think the hibachi guy cooks it barehanded. Naaaaah he cooks it only using a spatula to take the food on and off the grill. He never uses his hands period. Like I said before you can see it for yourself. For the people that are dissing on their soup for being "murky" is unaware that the "murk" is this beautiful thing called MISO. Lastly about the customer service, you gotta understand that they do NOT speak English as well as we do. So don't think of them being "rude" they're trying their hardest alright. NOTE: I apologize if you think i'm coming off rude, but I'm only stating the obvious that's need to heard. Overall great place to go to, keep up the good...
