Donât bring in outside food should be on a LARGE sign on the sun glaring windows to this shop! Or maybe put it clearly on the title of the store. Brought in 2 little girls 5 and 7 with a gluten free treat from a near by nice donut shop so mommy could try her treat, some heart coffee for the first time. We were told as we first waited for a table and just sat down, a little tired because we walked 8 blocks/10 minutes to get there because I like coffee, that we had to go outside in non shade 90 temp with our outside food. My little girls ate their donuts quickly outside đ which ruined that experience and then I still decided to try the coffee because I needed a morning coffee and we needed to sit before walking all the way back. My husband likes coffee and a treat so he just didnât eat his donut or get a coffee. He seemed uncomfortable and I felt bad having any of us walk all the way there. The mocha looked pretty but only OK tasting. Being rushed outside by the staff person just ruined the whole morning experience. We wonât be back. Put a serious âšď¸ to the beginning of our Portland vacation day which we have very few of. I suggest Just go to a coffee shop with a 4.7 or higher. Seems like anything else you are at risk of a sad experience. They also only had 3 of the same bread rolls left at 9:30 for any food options at all in the coffee shop for purchasing that I could see. The whole thing was just so weird and felt very stuck...

I took my father to an appointment and while i was waiting decided to look for a coffee shop in the area. I googled nearest coffee shop and Heart Coffee Roasters popped up. (I am wearing sweats as i am getting over the flu and have no makeup on...fyi). I walked over there and as i hit the door I feel all eyes on me, the people sitting in front are all staring at me! Weird... but I brush it off. I get in line and receive the same attention. I started feeling like I was unwelcome. I order a large coffee and a blueberry scone. Instead of asking me if i am taking my purchase to stay or to go the employee says "Your taking this to go right?" I was, so i said yes. I walk over to the area with the cream and sugar and a woman scouls at me and takes up the entire area while chatting with a friend. After waiting for 5 minutes I reach for the creamer and she huffs and puffs, grabs her items and walks away. At this point i am feeling really awkward and want to get the hell out of this hipster twilight zone! As i walk out i get the same creepy staring all eyes on me as i did when i walked in. I have never felt this way anywhere, ever!
The coffee was no better than the free coffee you get at your doctor's visit and their large is a small anywhere else. Not worth $3.50!!! The scone was delicious! That is the ONLY reason i gave them a second star! I will never step foot in...
Read moreIn a city filled with great coffee, Heart offers a good tasting cup. But if you have a problem with pretentiousness, this place is not for you. From the entirely lowercase letters in its name (capital letters must be oppressive?) to the fact that they refuse to grind your bagged coffee for you to the reality that their coffee is very overpriced ($4 for an aeropress or a small iced coffee) heart is a difficult place to visit, nevermind re-visit.
Did I mention that they shut off their internet on the weekends? And that they have a very prominent sign explaining that you should NOT interrupt the roaster at any time. I guess that's why they chose to put a bar that literally wraps around the roasting machine? Oh, and on a recent trip their bathroom was "Out of Order" and they were completely unwilling to allow customers to use an available bathroom just feet away from their regular one.
In a city filled with great coffee, there are much more welcoming environments to enjoy. I recommend skipping heart coffee roasters and focusing on Ristretto, Stumptown, Nossa Familia, and the other great coffee roasters...
