went there after a hard day work I have frequented matts as I love their food and consistency. the food has always been good and sometimes tires a wait. today they were busy like most days today is Saturday its 3:11 as I write this I just left maybe thirty minutes ago. I ordered as per usual at the iPad. today there was a woman I have never seen in the front where customers usually grab their food. she was making a tip jar not really doing much, I asked her how I could find my number because I lost my receipt and dint know my number. he looked bothered by the fact I had asked her a simple question and rudely replied " did you put your number down" and I said "yeah" she dint say anything after that which I took as my cue to leave. I felt like a bother and like my business wasn't welcomed there. I waited patiently for the text to say my food was ready. I finally got the text and went up to Gert my food. while I walked up I put my phone in my pocket and tried to explain to her that my order was up. I had a hard time getting my phone back out I coluldnt find it I did find m y work phone not my personal but by that time the lady was already acting rude saying "yeah we have ribs" making me feel stupid. my order was only one order of ribs and honestly I wish I would have opted for a mc chicken instead I know they treat their customers with dignity and respect even the less fortunate. with that said yeah the food is good but at what cost? will they make you feel wrong for losing a receipt and n out knowing your number? maybe put that person in the back and put someone a bit more friendly in the front helping customers. I wouldn't want her to be the face of...
Read moreMatt’s BBQ on N Mississippi Ave is the best barbecue I’ve had in Oregon, and in the ranking of the top 3 best barbecue pork ribs I’ve ever had. Coming from a self-proclaimed barbecue connoisseur, that statement means something to me.
The portions here are very generous and feel like a good value. I ordered the pork ribs because they only have beef ribs on the weekend (I went for lunch on a Monday) and was served four large spare ribs. Their pork ribs have an amazing and unique texture to them, where it is almost like candied jerky on the outside and juicy on the inside. They said it’s a MOP recipe from Tutsy (apologies for any misspelling). It comes with a few sliced pickles which are refreshing, juicy, and well flavored.
They have a sauce counter next to the order pickup window with four different bbq sauce pump options. These included Cherry Chipotle, Peach Mustard (my favorite, unlike anything I’ve every tried), Spicy Mustard (my second favorite), and Hog Vinegar. I liked how easy it was to try their different offerings.
To order, you place an order on the iPad screen and then get a number. You then seat yourself on one of their wooden bench options, which they have both covered in the shade and in the sun, and wait for your number to be called.
If you go with someone who doesn’t eat bbq, they have other food stall options on both sides. Although I can’t eat macaroni & cheese, everyone else was ordering it and it looks absolutely delicious.
I can’t wait to come back soon - hopefully for...
Read moreOverall Rating and is it worth a visit: 9/10 and absolutely it is. Admittedly, when I think of Portland, I don't think of BBQ, but Matt's has completely flipped my perception of what the Pacific Northwest is capable off when it comes to smoking meats. I had this place marked to visit for a couple years ever since I read Aaron Franklin's recommendation in his Masterclass guide. Needless to say, Franklin was as much right on the money with Matt's as he is with his own barbecue. Walking up to the food truck (and yes it is in a food truck, but they smoke everything off-site), you're a little unsure of what you're about to have, but are quickly rewarded as soon as you receive your order. This was easily the best brisket I have had outside of Texas and sits in my Top 5 of all time. The ribs are also a Top 10 contender of all time for me, so suffice to say, I left full and happy when I stopped by with my wife this past October. You can grab beers next door or in typical Portland fashion, there are several coffee and alternative drink options among the multiple other food trucks that lie in this little conclave in north Portland. Great atmosphere and even better bbq, make this a must for any enthusiast looking for change up to the more traditional PNW options. I will 100% be back the next time I visit the city and would recommend anyone making the trip to plan a stop. Full review at The House of...
