Badly needs a new indoor seating/layout, no elbow room, must not mind getting cozy with total strangers. When its busy and all the outdoor tables are full, foot traffic from the door to the register can be tricky. Very loud interior, bring your headphones during warm weather, order up call-outs will be shouted at full volume to outdoor seating.
Menu is confusing and leaves out many details that you may want. For example, some sandwiches on the "cold" list specify toasted bread, others don't. Can I ask to have my bread toasted if not? Are any substitutions allowed? Is that what makes a sandwich "cold"? Can I add an additional meat or cheese to a sandwich? The menu division of Hot Vs Cold sandwiches is remarkably ambiguous, why the mystery? As far as I can tell a hot sandwich means the kitchen will cook its ingredients when ordered, but that doesn't seem to be the case with every sandwich? The menu/website offers no details on these points. I am left with more unknowns than I'm comfortable spending money on. Service at the register seems to vary greatly, and several times when I have asked these menu-related questions at the register, the response was snotty or condescending, sometimes a shrug, sometimes a a plain "I don't know". So despite having good service at the register occasionally, I don't want to walk in the door and roll the dice to find out which I am getting that day. I will always just assume its going to be dreadful, and go somewhere else. And their website photo "gallery" is blank. So good luck digging through their Instagram page to research what your sandwich will turn out to be, because while you may find photos of recent specials and lots of cool tattoos, they don't have many posts about all their menu options. And that is important because there's 8 sandwiches total. That's it. And at least one of them has no meat. Vegetarian options are cool but if you wanted meat on your Meat Cheese Bread, that winnows down the options by 12%. On my last visit, they were out of a good deal of sides, including almost all the flavors of Tim's Chips bags, so that was disappointing. Ordered their soup of the day with my sandwich, which arrived luke warm at best. I thought it was questionable but didn't make a fuss because it tasted fine regardless. Then about 3-4 hours later I projectile vomited in my driveway, and could not stop thinking about the luke warm soup I ingested. THAT BEING SAID; they do appear to utilize high quality ingredients, and the kitchen seems competent! Honestly, the best part of MCB was that the actual sandwich makers do seem to understand what they are doing. Maybe my experiences are one off flukes, but after so many years of spotty results, it feels more like a pattern. I really want to like MCB, and support local businesses, heaven knows this neighborhood needs more good food options, but I can simply not recommend patronizing this business until it makes some...
Read moreAhhh yes one of 2 neighborhood cafes offering, among other things, authentic New Mexican-style food. You may scoff at reading that - few states have their own cuisine, after all. But, fer'reals, the breakfast burrito with green chili is effin' MAGICAL. That burrito takes me right back to a little corner shop in Albuquerque run by 'The Burrito Lady' and make no mistake it's one of the best. I've personally tried dozens of variations in and around the 505 (eastsiiide!) and there's just something enchanting about crispy hashbrowns and the creeping heat of a roasted green chili sauce, it makes you feel alive. THIS PLACE HAZ IT AND YOU CAN HAZ TOO. So there's other stuff on the menu as well, but umm...well I'm sure it's all fantastic but dat burrito, my friends. That breakfast burrito....do yourself a favor and buy a jar of green chilis while you're there. After you order, swerve yourself next door to BEER, where you can wash down that sweet heat with some craft brew. They welcome outside food and the pairing is perfect. 5 stars. best breakfast...
Read moreWe have been to Portland about half a dozen times and I am so glad we finally found this wonderul establishment. Everything here was awesome. The food, the service, the guys working and running the joint, all of it. I researched best breakfast burritos in Portland and this spot showed up. I read a little bit of the description and knew this is where I was headed. The ham, egg, and cheese was melt in your mouth good, the beef and blue cheese was out loud "mmmm" good, and the burrito might have been one of the best things we ate this year with our stay in Portland. They do little things well, like fresh baked breads and what not. They had positive vibes all the way and I can't wait to return next year. I highly recommend to any locals and out of towners alike. This place was so...
