9/23 Update - I just left this racist place without ordering. My family is in town and I wanted to give this place my business and have my non vegan family enjoy local Portland food. However, the strawberry blond guy treated me with disrespect so I am updating my review and NEVER going there again.
We arrived and were not greeted. I patiently waited for the strawberry blond big guy behind the counter. I waited at least 10 minutes Two groups of people came in after us He served the guy who came in after us. I said no big deal. I will go next. These people obviously saw me standing here. Then the strawberry blond guy started taking the other groups order I interrupted and told the guy that I was next. He told me that the group was next. I told him that the guy he took the order from was also behind me. That I let him go in front of me. The strawberry blond guy goes “I’LL ALLOW IT. I repeat what he said and he confirmed what he said. I then go, I don’t need you to allow anything and let the other group go. While I’m there waiting again the strawberry guy is talking about me and my family! I overhear him talking about us and my puppy. We left!!!
I will never order from this place again. They have a “Black Lives Matter” sign up but it’s bull. That guy was so disrespectful it’s beyond bad customer service.
I recently got the chance to try the vegan croissant from Sweetpea, a local bakery and it was absolutely delicious! It was flaky and perfectly crunchy on the outside while being light and fluffy on the inside. The croissant had the perfect balance of sweet and savory flavors, and I was particularly impressed by the bold, but light balance of the buttery aroma. It paired perfectly with the pumpkin spice latte that topped everything off. Overall, this was the best vegan croissant I've ever tasted and I'm already looking forward to having...
Read moreSweetpea Baking Co. is nestled in the same grouping as Herbivore and Food Fight, a little vegan enclave in Portland. It's surprisingly spacious and pretty inside, quiet and nice. Great for going and sitting down for a while. The clientele doesn't look especially "hippie vegan" or anything. That's not a bad thing if they do, but sometimes people want a different vibe.
The food is fabulous. I had a bagel toasted like I like it with some sencha tea. My wife had Stumptown coffee and some coffee cake. All of these things were delicious. We took a cookie or two to go and some bagged coffee. I love that they have teeny cookies available for a buck. There are a ton of options. I wish they had more savory options, it was all very sweet. I would've had a croissant if they had it. A bagel is a fine substitute though.
The only other reservation I have is that the lady behind the counter seemed a bit impatient with us. It was our first time and we were visiting Portland and had heard so much about this place, it was sad that she wasn't willing to wait 30 seconds for us to decide if we wanted a cookie or a brownie. It wasn't a big deal, she was probably having a day or something, and in the end it didn't detract from our experience.
If we lived in PDX I would definitely come back again. I already miss...
Read moreI love this place. I think I’ve came here over 50 times in the last 5 years, and more often in the last two years.
Here’s a few things that need to be tweaked to offer an even greater experience:
Refurbish interior. No resources for that?! No problem, ask for investments. You need a capital infusion, let us your customers contribute to this establishment. Survey your baked goods offering. Eliminate goods that are left at end of day or reduce offering considerably and INCREASE the popular items. Increase the price for the popular items, I don’t mind paying $.25 cents extra, but those extra cents add up over time for you as the owner. In addition to interior refurbish, improve atmosphere by creating an ambiance that’s adequate for your business type. Bake some croissants at 10 am, let the smell of freshly baked pastries 🥐 take over. Play cafe like music, easy on the ear, lower volume to ensure those with company, or reading can hear their own thoughts or each other. Please for the love of anything that’s Howly, refrain from playlists that are…an acquired, particular taste, that’s a detractor. You don’t want to have detractors, even subtle ones.
I really hope this business will continue to grow, I love this place, so much potential and...
