Space Monkey Coffee — Restaurant in Portland

I love this place. It's old school Portland and I like the vibe. Will always support. Have been coming here for so long. I know it's hard times for small businesses and this place is no exception. Please support your local small businesses!

That said, recently it's feeling pretty unclean. I will no longer get food from here, only coffee.

In addition to the general feel of dirtiness, they let a homeless man basically live on the sofa, with his blanket. I've seen him there for months. When the shop is closed, he's outside on the street with the same blanket.

I know hearts may be in the right place, but that sofa he lives on in your shop for hours on end is beyond unsanitary. It makes the entire cafe seem very, very dirty and therefore unwelcoming. Not because his homelessness is an issue (he seems quiet and respectful), but the level of uncleanliness is not okay for anyplace serving food.

I want to keep supporting you. I have passed you up a few times recently though because I see that man CONSTANTLY camped out on your sofa, and honestly it is too unclean. When your main room is this visible unsanitary and unkept, how can...

I ordered the Peach Streusel Muffin, and it had mold laced throughout the whole thing, and on the outside paper 🤢 I can't believe I ate some of it before realizing it.

I appreciate the reminder that things can go wrong with baked goods, especially in warmer weather. I also appreciate the reminder that a simple request for a replacement could have avoided a detailed review and the involvement of health authorities, but this was a to go order, and that was not possible. Also, it was appropriate and the responsible thing to do. Not only for my safety, but for others as well. You clearly show acknowledgment of the problem but have not implemented policies to address it.

I’ll consider sticking to places that don’t make everything from scratch, though I must admit, I’d prefer to stick to establishments that prioritize customer health, safety, and quality over excuses.

I am not one to leave bad reviews, however I was very surprised by the rudeness I received today when contacting Space Monkey. I called the shop at 11am this morning inquiring about job offerings. The person who answered the phone said "normally I would talk to you about this but you called a coffee shop at 9am which is a horrible time. So no, I am not hiring." I said "okay, I hope you have a great day, goodbye." And the person had already hung up before I got those words out. It seemed to me like the person was stressed out and taking it out on someone undeserving... not cool! Plus I called 2 hours after their 'rush'. So Space Monkey Coffee... How do you expect people to injuire about jobs or be hired? I am doing the most respectful thing i can during COVID - to call ahead instead of walking in every building when I please.
