IMPORTANT!!! UPDATE EDIT: Visit #2; I had a deep hunger pang after an arduous journey, hearing a train horn blare and echo out of the depths of East Industrial I caught a scent carried on the air, Smash Burger. I knew what my next move was. With the determination of a 5 year old scaling the kitchen cabinets hunting for last year's Halloween candy, I too would have my prize. Following the aroma of umami released by the expert technique of firmly pressing ground chuck into hot steel starting the Maillard reaction; amino acids, proteins and sugars, browned into a delicious disc of bovine beauty, I entered the den, ordered and waited. What arrives is no short of perfection, the prize of Wolf's Head, the smash burger. Belly full, my quest was over. Eat the Burger! Tell your friends, tell your brother, tell your Dad tell your Mother, THIS is the stop for a mouth smacking gut bombing finger painting shirt staining smash burger. If you're a true PDX'er from the old days location won't be an issue, parking a premium so plan accordingly. Parents needing a fuel stop for the kids after a stop at OMSI save yourself the headache leave the car parked and a block away is a crowd pleasing oasis of ground beef & buns.* If you're lucky you'll get to experience the awe of modern diesel locomotives, but this place is all about the burger. Eat the burger!

Read moreStopped in to Wolf's Head to grab some burgers on our way back to the farm. This PDX stop is traditionally a Burgerville stop. This "off" season from the farm though they have disappointed. Three lukewarm burgers in three trips. So we did some burger googling and Wolf's Head came up. Not too far from I-5. Great burger joint. The burgers are given a really good smash on the flattop. They get that nice bit of crunchy lattice on the edge. A nice toasty bun and an abundant garden on my "Double Deluxe". The smashed style meant that our meal was out fast. I also had a chocolate shake (no malt). My wife had a "Single" with a full garden and the girls had the same but no garden. My wife also had the special malted Salted Caramel and Olive Oil milkshake. Everything was done quite well. I'm giving five stars because there is a real desire from the team to make great burgers. And the burgers really do deliver. The curly fries were a bit too seasoned for me as was the fry sauce. Very enjoyable, mind you, just a bit beyond my preference of balance. I'd prefer a more simple fry myself. Or even their curly fries with just salt and pepper. This is a burger joint for burger fans. Great job. Price is decent as well. We were all very happy with our experience. Despite the unappetizing KC Chiefs flag....
Read moreWe enjoy finding new places to eat in my hometown whenever we are in Portland. This time we found a gem under the Hawthorne Bridge! We wanted a good smash burger and we were not disappointed. From the moment we opened the door we were greeted by a friendly, smiling face and the smell of total yumminess. This is a small and simple diner under the bridge, in what use to be the produce cold storage warehouses. You order and pay at the front counter and grab a can of soda from the fridge. Then you find a seat in the small dining area and minutes later you get the smash burger of your dreams. Simple yet so delicious, with melted cheese and a bit of mayo it was incredibly delicious. We enjoyed watching a train go by while we ate. The service friendly and fast and the food was great. You can order your burger pretty much any way you want, we went with cheese and mayo, I had a single and my partner had the double. We were delighted to find cheese curds as a side, one of our favorites, our cheese curds were hot and melty, with some great ranch to dip them into. Parking is mostly covered under the bridge and it was pretty easy to find a spot after making the block a couple of times. We can hardly wait to go back. Please...
