As someone who dreamed of having a StayPineapple experience for YEARS, I have to say I was SEVERELY disappointed.
We came here to celebrate our honeymoon, and the staff didn't even acknowledge that we were celebrating a special occasion, even though I mentioned it in the booking and at check in.
This hotel has a reputation for making special events memorable, yet when we brought OUR special event to the attention of the staff, they acted annoyed and put out.
We're doing a multi-week tour of the PNW for our honeymoon, and almost every other hotel we've stayed at has gone out of their way to make our honeymoon special for us.
I wasn't expecting to get anything for free, just some acknowledgement that we chose this hotel to celebrate one of the most important occasions of our lives would have been nice.
In addition, the hotel itself was disappointing. The amenities were not much more extensive than a regular hotel. Definitely not nearly the level of amenities I would expect, given the $30 "resort fee."
Our favorite amenity was the free reusable water bottle and unlimited refills in the lobby. We are big fans of PATH and have a small collection from our travels, so it was a really cool souvenir.
The dog toy they put on the beds was one of the more positive aspects of our experience as well. It was cute, and is available for purchase from the room if you take it with you.
You would think that the other StayPineapple merch in the room would be available for purchase as well, but when we inquired about buying the mugs from our room, we were told we have to buy them online.
I'm sorry, I'm NOT going to do that. When I'm traveling, I don't want to buy my souvenirs ONLINE, I want to take it with me. Sending me to a website takes literally all the fun out of it.
When we checked in, I was interested in the bathrobes, which are available for ~$150 in the online shop, but those were a severe let down as well.
The outside is soft, but the inside is itchy and rough. The string isn't thick enough to hold the robe closed. I only tried it on for a picture, but it was so uncomfortable I couldn't keep it on much longer than that.
The beds, however, were VERY comfortable. I loved the 2 duvets. The mattress was lush and large. The bed was one of the more positive aspects of the experience. Definitely one of the comfiest hotel beds I've stayed in.
The room overall was fairly uncomfortable, however. My biggest complaint is that you have no climate control over your own room, and the overall AC was barely working. The room was HOT, and the air was still and stuffy.
The front desk provided a fan, which helped, but actual AC would have been better.
The shower was super uncomfortable as well. It is an open shower, so it is impossible to shower without getting water ALL over the floor. In addition, the water flow is weak, so you have to stay a while to get all the soap off.
They have Tommy Bahama Traveler's Collection soap, including liquid soap at the sink, which is AMAZING, but the conditioner in my room was totally empty.
The towels are big and soft, but they didn't quite soak up the gross water from the open shower that I had to walk over all night to get to the toilet.
Given the lack of airflow, the bathroom floor was unable to dry, and stayed damp our whole stay.
In each hallway, they have these horrible air fresheners that smell like you accidentally let all the juice out of a Febreeze bathroom freshener at once.
The smell was cheap and strong, it made me gag each time I went down the hall. Most hotels have air fresheners, and I don't usually mind, but the ones they have at the Hotel Rose are gross.
Maybe it's because they allow dogs and want to make sure people don't smell the dogs? But honestly I would rather smell a wet dog than that air freshener.
If you have a dog, I would say the resort fee would be much more worth it for you than it was for us. The amenities are definitely geared towards dog parents.
Ultimately I'm glad I can say I had a "StayPineapple" experience, but don't think...
Read moreFebruary 13, 2024 - This is an update to my previous review of the Hotel Rose. We received a response to my review shortly after it was posted and I just want to say the Manager was very thoughtful and interested in my comments. She was very forthcoming with information and very receptive to our comments. She took care of our concerns. Thank you Pineapple Management for being the kind of hotel we knew you were.
We stayed at this hotel on January 19th for three nights. We have stayed at several Pineapple locations but this was by far the worst experience that we have had, and because of our experience, I'm sorry to say we will not being staying at another Pineapple location.
We arrived at the hotel at 5:30pm and after traveling all day to get to Portland our room was not ready. The man at the front desk seemed pretty indifferent to the fact that we traveled all day and we just wanted to get into our room. He said we could go somewhere and come back in an hour (it was very cold outside and we took an Uber from the airport), we could go to the bar and have a drink or we can just wait in the lobby. It would have been nice for him to say..."here is a couple of drink coupons on us, we will call you when your room is ready." That did not happen. About an hour later I did receive a text that our room was finally ready.
Prior to our arrival, I received an email asking if we had any special requests. I asked for a higher level room looking over the city (which is the room I paid for). When we got to our room we looked at a grey wall, not over the city. Why bother asking if you don't read the requests of the guests? Or give them the room they paid for?
Once we got to the room, the room itself was very cold. There is no way to adjust the heat from your room. They have control of the heater.
We did eat in the restaurant and the food was pretty good, albeit $6 for 1 deviled egg (2 halves) is a bit stiff. The female server obviously did not want to be there. She was very unfriendly. I am starting to detect a pattern here.
We encountered two different crew members at the coffee cart in the mornings, both were fabulous.
Once we got home, we tried to call the hotel seven, yes seven different occasions. We were told the manager was not available, in a meeting, away from their desk and multiple other excuses. We left several messages. Not once did we get a call back. This lackadaisical attitude is what really upset us. Don't they care about what their guests have to say? Are they afraid of the phone? I was just so disappointed by their uninterested attitude.
Loved the San Francisco and the Seattle locations but, avoid this Portland location at all costs. Do...
Read moreWe booked the queen bed riverside view suite months before our stay directly through the hotel website. About an hour before we arrived, I received an email about an update to our reservation - they “upgraded” us to a king suite… but this added an extra $50 to the total cost + an extra $5 to the original amenity fee. To be clear, we did not request an upgrade or a change to the reservation. When we arrived at check in, I told them we did not want the upgrade, and they assured us they would not charge us extra, and they had the room available so they decided to upgrade us for free. Then, they tried to charge us the extra $55 anyway! I had to show them my original confirmation price and they eventually changed it. I find that really sketchy and they were definitely trying to take advantage of us, hoping we wouldn’t notice the price increase.
On top of that, I was originally going to book through Airbnb because it was $20 cheaper than booking through the hotel website. I called and asked why it was more expensive, and they said the hotel booking includes the amenity fee of $20. Turns out, that was a lie. They charged me an extra $20 anyway.
The “amenity fee” is absolutely a scam. They advertise “free water” and “goodies.” We just stayed for one night, so we paid $20 for 2 small water bottles… how is that fair? We did not use the coffee or have any “goodies.” Just charge by consumption like literally every other hotel.
As for location, the view is somewhat pretty and it is close to a lot of things in the city. However, the hotel is next to a lot of homeless camps, which made us feel unsafe going out at night. The parking situation is very sketchy. You’re parking at street level with no security gate or anything… for $25!!! Anyone could walk into the parking lot and break in with no security reinforcement. And this has happened to guests before. They say they have security but we didn’t see any. We had to bring every single thing from our car into our room for fear that someone would break into our car.
The room was somewhat nice, but the comforter was strange. Essentially, you have 2 comforters instead of one, so my boyfriend and I each had our own blanket. They were very small and kept slipping off, so neither of us slept well. We would’ve preferred one large comforter. The toilet bowl was dirty, and the shower was odd - there is no door and a lot of water got on the floor. The bathroom didn’t seem clean at all.
Overall, we wouldn’t recommend and won’t be returning. My $112 room turned into $154 after the ridiculous hidden fees for literally nothing. They try to scam you out...
