Bennett's Sandwich Shop — Restaurant in Portsmouth

Staff members greeted us immediately and cheerfully. We needed to get a very quick bite so that we were not ravenous upon arriving at friends' house for dinner. We'd had only breakfast and were hungry but didn't want to eat a lot. We looked at the excellent menu on the wall ( someone is REALLY good with chalk!!) and chose chicken bites. We were asked if we wanted 4- or 6- piece. We chose six. We could easily have gotten away with four. Generous portion. There were two large cold beverage cases and iced tea and carbonated drinks plus probably a bunch of other options were available. I was a bit frazzled and didn't pay much attention to what all was available. The chicken bites were piping hot and very tasty. The only negative in our visit was that the music in the place was very loud. That it was not what I usually listen to was beside the point. It actually had a good beat and I think I would have liked it if I were repeatedly exposed to it. It was just so loud....it was hard to interact easily with employees because of volume. I would like to start by saying I have always been a huge fan of Bennetts. I am gluten free (sensitivity not an allergy) and it's always a very convenient place to go that doesn't upset my stomach. Well today I had a very different experience than what I was typically used to receiving from Bennetts. Today I came in with my mother, brother and sister. 3/4 sandwiches we ordered were gluten free, we informed them that we all only had a sensitivity NOT an allergy. Very quickly after ordering and sitting down we could hear one of the cooks LOUDLY complaining about us and making fun of us for "ordering gluten free food at a sub shop". We had to take our food to go and eat elsewhere because the interaction left us all very uncomfortable. I must say I am immensely disappointed in this experience and don't honestly know if I will ever return...

I recently visited Bennett’s Sandwich Shop and wanted to share a bit of feedback: Overall, the food was decent, but we encountered a few hiccups in the process. We initially tried to place an order online, but it didn’t go through, so we had to call the store directly. That was a bit inconvenient and not what we expected.

When we arrived to pick up our order, there was some confusion and we ended up receiving someone else’s order because they had the same name. We had to go back inside to sort it out, and the staff seemed a bit disorganized. Eventually, we got the correct food. The sandwiches and coffee were okay—not extraordinary, but decent enough.

One last note: there were no napkins included, which was a bit inconvenient for a takeout order. I probably should have asked but forgot. Overall, it’s a decent place and...
