Ok, so the food is good. I love the food, and while expensive it is good enough to justify.
The real problems here are how they handle allergens. I have a -Severe- nut allergy. I almost died today, because they could not be bothered to A) label which products had allergens and B) communicate which ones did when I asked- TWICE.
Because I'm very well aware pastries are highly likely to contain nuts, I make it a point to scope out any place that sells them before I even think about buying any. So I came in one night, asked which products had nuts. Some are obvious- nutella cronuts, products that have visible nuts on or in the pastry, etc. But that's not Always the case- sometimes it's made with almond flower, or they mix the nuts in, or put them inside. So I asked, it took a few minutes to get an answer (not ideal, but I wasn't in a rush) and they told me That the only ones I needed to avoid were -ONE- specific kind of pastry, and that every other kind (that wasn't obviously made with nuts) was totally fine. I left without buying anything (i do this for a reason, I'll explain later.).
Now, the fact I had to ask in the first place is a problem. Literally everything you buy in any grocery store that you can consume tells you what they are made of, and specifically lists allergens and how they are in there. This is a bakery, a high risk place to begin with. And if you just print some labels, boom- you've avoided all possibility of a lawsuit.
I came in again later to try out some food- asked again, got told the same thing. Other than the one pastry and the obvious ones, it's safe.
So, I go there a few times (4 to be precise), everyone I live with loves the pastries, myself included.
No problems, so I have good reason to believe I was given accurate information regarding which products to avoid.
I learned today, that I was not. Turns out, the macaroons are not safe- even though I was told they were and the manager(who I assume owns the shop) highly recommended them.
I didn't get them until today, when I wanted to splurge on treats and try something new.
Big mistake! When I noticed I was having an allergic reaction, I asked again if they had any nuts. Only now did they explained that the macaroons were made with almond flour. That information is again, not visible, nor was it communicated the last 2 times I asked- in fact, they stated the opposite. I was told twice they were totally fine to eat if you have a nut allergy.
Now, even at this point, I wouldn't much care- but then they started blaming me for their mistake. I was told "anyone who eats macaroons knows They are made with almond flour!" first, I have never had one before today. And second, that's not Always the case. I can buy sausage made without any meat, so even if I "knew" that,i would have zero reason to assume that's the case here- which is why I asked, twice, on 2 separate visits. (2 weeks in between the first 2 Visits, so this isn't just chance error- this is why I scope it out and ask the same questions both times. They won't remember who I am, so whatever they tell me is what they tell most people.) I was told a new disclaimer, that "they can't garuntee that anything is safe" which I was not told either time, otherwise I would not have ever eaten there. When I find business that cannot garuntee that anything is safe, I stay away. I was not told this, and was told specifically that most of their products were safe.
Having an allergic reaction is a very painful, frightening, stressful, potentially lethal experience for me. Victim blaming on top of that is way too much.
Had the manager/owner (the same one I spoke to the 2 times I asked about allergens and who fed me the bullcrap I just described today) at least said "I'm sorry" I would likely not be writing this review. Or at least it would be a 3 star instead of a one star. If they make it right, I'm happy to amend my review. Putting warning labels/allergen information up is an essential first step. You should have done that when you started. Second, a sincere apology, you put my...
Read moreI'll skip anything related to decor, et al. At the end of the day, can it deliver on the pastries? There are also some pretty good looking savory items, but I'd just had dinner elsewhere. That wasn't on the menu, so to speak. Macaroons. The ultimate, impossible to make, cookie". The perfect macaroon is crunchy meringue on the outside while being chewy inside. It has to have a filling that has enough intensity to balance the meringue. Finally, the balance of filling to meringue has to be perfect. Of the six we purchased, there were minor issues with a couple of those areas. That said, I've had ones in Paris that were no better. The cronut has been trendy long enough that it is now on the downward side of trendy. That said, I've not had one before. As a result I don't have a reference for the best, except for knowing it's a cross with the doughnut and croissant. The one I had straddled the line extremely well. We also purchased a palmier. It was everything you could hope for. Absolutely dead on. So, with that as a reference, I expect the cronut pastry to be correct. No, it's not cheap. However, anyone complaining about the prices is spending too much time eating bad faux food chemical concoctions from the local mega-mart as their benchmark. It's dead on...
Read moreFirst timer here! Definitely came here for what they are popular for - CRONUTS. Yes, CRONUTS. Never had one in my life before so this was LIFE CHANGING. I mean, who doesn’t like croissants and donuts? Who was the original genius who combined them together?
So I felt like a kid in a candy store, wanting to try all their flavors! They have dulce de leche, Bavarian, Nutella, lemon, and other flavors. My ultimate favorite was the Bavarian creme - it was to die for!
They also sell ice cream by the cone, macaroons, sandwiches, and other pastries. But my mission was to zone in on the Cronuts and boy oh boy they did not disappoint!
However, they are NOT cheap! For one cronut you will spend about $3.50+ ! I was really really shocked by the price. For three cronuts you can buy a dozen donuts with....so be ready to spend an arm and a leg for it. I never said they are not worth it. I would go broke if I came here on a weekly basis (so I won’t!) but if you’re feeling like you need to indulge on a cronut, this is the...
