Get ready for a nap! OMG, you get so much food for the right price. The first things I was impressed with was the pricing! For just $12 you can get one meat, hush puppies, coleslaw, and two sides like banana pudding and Mac N Cheese. WOW! Now the location is not ideal if you are expecting a restaurant style experience, but hey this is BBQ it's meant to be eaten outside. So, on with my experience. The place is easy to find. once I went into the gas station store you can sell the BBQ. I walked right up to the counter which is on the back left side of the store and the young man at the register was ready to take my order. The rustic style of this kitchen made it easy to read the menu. I basically saw two prices $10 for one meat with one side, whoch still gets you hush puppies and coleslaw, or $12 for two sides and both options comes with a drink! That's an amazing deal. The young guy at the counter warned me that I was going to need a nap after this meal and he was right. I ordered the pulled pork with mac and cheese, banana pudding, coleslaw and hush puppies. The hush puppies fried just right, they have a crispy outside and a soft fluffy inside. The hush puppies also go great with the hush puppy sauce which taste like honey mustard. The mac and cheese was super cheesy and creamy and for me were just perfect. Nothing worse than rubbery stringy mac and cheese, the noodles were cooked to perfection. The coleslaw was okay, I'm not a fan of shredded coleslaw, I like more of a tradition style with pieces of carrots and strips of cabbage in the slaw. But that's a texture thing for me. The flavor was there just not the texture, but then again you may like that. The pulled pork was juicy and tender. You can tell it was made right because it was tender, you can taste all the flavors of the seasonings and it shows when you first look at it. The pork wasn't dry and my only complaint is that I didn't ask for any slices of bread to make a sandwich out of it. Also I should have asked for their BBQ sauce, but alone the meet was still great. As for the Banana pudding, man was this a great dessert to finish off a lunch break. I had to save my dessert after a couple of bites because I was so full from this amazing box. The banana pudding was creamy, sweet, and had just the right amount of whipped crème. If you are looking for some real down home BBQ in hurry and want to get the most for your lunch money, go to the Chop Shop you won't be sorry. Also make sure to buy an energy drink or a cup of coffee for...
Read moreThey have since moved. Couldn't find this yesterday at all on Google, but... they are now at 210 Six Forks Road in back of a Shell Station as someone else had posted. They likely ARE still out at the fairgrounds on weekends, but you can find them during the week off Six Forks close to the Wake Forest Rd intersection. Only a couple tables inside, but you can take it with you. Looked for a close Barbecue place and stumbled on this one. HAPPY.
Definitely worth a visit. LOVED the barbecue. Had a nice richness to it - not sure exactly what the chef used but gave it more personality than the standard vinegar/red pepper/salt treatment. Definitely could taste the smokiness of the meat. HUSHPUPPIES were awesome. Wish there had been more on the plate, but decided against asking for more - keep those carbs down at least a bit LOL. And on the topic of carbs, HAD to enjoy some of the mac and cheese. Was surprised as it was more of a white cheese dish than I had expected - but was delicious. Enough of the cheese to bind it all together without being over the top. Was NOT a fan of the slaw. Not that it was bad, but I like mine with at least a bit of sweetness/pickley goodness. This was more "vegetable-y". Presented well, but just didn't have the taste I was looking for. They offered a few different sauces - the "hushpuppy sauce" which I have never heard of before struck me as possibly more of a mustard based sauce that people from OTHER areas of the country might enjoy ON their barbecue. It was great on the hushpuppies - but they were absolutely fine without too. And didn't want to muck up the deliciousness that was ALREADY in front of me with yet another sauce on it. Rounded the whole thing out with some french fries. Sure they're a staple but they were cooked with the proper amount of crunch and a bit of salt on top - NOT here for health food!
All in all - a great meal for about 12 bucks. Fast. Friendly - spoke with Christie who works the front - very personable and informative. Will definitely be back to try the OTHER stuff...
Read moreMy girlfriend and I stopped at the food truck for Chop Shop BBQ when we were at the flea market in Raleigh, NC. Looking for some of the amazing Carolina BBQ I had heard so much about, we thought this small truck would be an excellent way to start. Don’t let the small truck fool you though, this place packs GIANT flavor. The experience started with the two individuals who had been running the truck and making the food. Their kindness and positive, upbeat personality showed me that we had made a good decision about coming to this location. They were very polite, personable and we loved talking to them!
I got their BBQ plate, a hearty portion of pulled meat with their BBQ sauce. It came with two sides, along with the best hush puppies I’ve ever had and a nice tangy, vinegary coleslaw. Good coleslaw is important to me and it certainly delivered on flavor. Speaking of delivering on flavor, if you don’t pick their Cowboy Baked Beans as one of your sides, you’re missing out on a flavor experience! Those beans were packed full of deliciousness, and had the smoothest and most amazing taste of any baked beans I have EVER had. They were so delicious my girlfriend went back to get another side of them, which we really enjoyed! The final side consisted of a cucumber salad, a simple yet delicious and light ending to a hearty and full meal! Their portions were good and my leftovers won’t be left over for long. I would highly recommend this place if you are in the Raleigh area. Their food packs flavor, variety and fun and you won’t be disappointed if you stop in to...
