Good food at a fair price. Nice menu options with variety for everyone. Nice atmosphere and was surprised it wasn't busier. Was there on a Tuesday at 12noon, lots of open seating. All the convenient parking is paid/metered. Service was excellent. The hostesses and wait staff were attentive, checking on us frequently without being a bother. Quick to recommend and discuss menu options. The biscuit/hush puppy basket to start was a nice touch. The biscuits were fine, but nothing special. The small hush puppies were very good dipped in butter. Ordered the Pit Sampler Appetizer as an entrée, so I could try a variety of their options. The pimento cheese balls were a phenomenal blend of firm, crunchy exterior with velvety, gentle spicy interior. Dipped in a little of the spicy jelly sauce made them quite satisfying. Pit-smoked wings and deviled eggs were both prepared very well and met expectations, though nothing that really makes them stand out as a signature item. The BBQ Soul Rolls were something different that did have that stand out, signature quality. This is a fried flat-bread roll (tortilla) filled with pulled pork, collards, and carrots; think of a chimichanga but with bbq. Combined with the Oak Island remoulade sauce, or pepper jelly sauce is a nice treat that gives a good variety to the pallet. It is a nice texture, with an enticing blend of flavors. Over-all, it was an enjoyable experience with a couple notable attributes and excellent service. I would enjoy coming again to try other items on the menu not included in their sampler.

First of all let me say that any past experience I had with the pit is not a reflection of the review I'm about to leave. I threw my husband a surprise birthday party at the pit last night because prior to yesterday it was one of our favorite restaurants. We had 20 people in attendance 15 adults and five children. It was a surprise celebration so the guests arrived at 6:00 my husband and myself arrived at 6:30. We were immediately asked for our drink order which was taken and that was the most useful our server was all night. There were dinners that were ordered that never arrived, there were dinners that were ordered that were undercooked, there were dinners that were ordered such as my husband's whose chicken wings came out the color of a Good Year tire. My appetizer came out 20 minutes after my dinner. We never received hush puppies some guests ask for their food to go because of how long it took which we were not concerned about because we were enjoying each other's company and ordering a significant amount of drinks. Our beverages were never refilled. It was much to my surprise that the food was as horrible as it was for the time that we arrived which is prime time for dinner. When we left and got back to the hotel I realized that I had left a box that I put his birthday cards in. I immediately called and they said that there was no box they could not find anything in the trash so I went back to the restaurant myself and told them that I was more than happy to look. I noticed there was a camera and ask for the camera to be ran back because it was right above the section in which we were sitting. I was then informed that there had been a box but that it had been broken down by one of the bust boys who was not there anymore. The manager comes back gives me one of the party favor bags with two cards but they had been opened when in fact I put them in the box and they were sealed. She told me that the recording only showed the bust boy dumping the box and nothing else but I was not able to see the video myself. For all of the hassle before we left the restaurant the manager gave us the appetizer free and she gave us a $25 gift card and replaced my husband's wings however those cards were from family and had sentimental value and regardless they did not belong to Spencer the bust boy who busted the table so Monday I will be going to speak to the general manager Roberts to demand to view the video and get back the gift card that was in one of those cards. Terrible experience and after we use the gift card that we were given by the manager we probably will not be returning to patronize this business any further. Edit: I called back and spoke with Robert today and not only did he deny me access to view the video but try to insult my intelligence when I asked him if one of his employees did not steal the card and gift card who did Casper and he said perhaps so. He stated something about several people in my party walking out without paying however myself and my husband were the last people to leave and nobody brought that to our attention and I personally have my receipt. This sheer ignorance and unwillingness to be accountable is what gets me.

Being our first visit, we ordered a nice selection off the menu. The chopped bbq pork was just ok. It wasnât extremely flavorful. It was moist and the portion size was large. The fried chicken was delicious. Seasoned well and fried to perfection! The brisket was more similar to a roast. The fat had not been trimmed off and it came smothered in sauce so it was hard to get a flavor profile outside of the sauce. As a Texas native I know a good brisket and this was not that. The pork was much better. The ribs were falling off the bone tender. Again though, they were drenched in sauce making it impossible to detect any flavor beyond the sauce. As far as the sides dishes go, the fried okra was absolutely delicious. House made, perfectly seasoned and fried crispy golden brown. It was my favorite part of the meal. The macaroni and cheese was good. Nice and cheesy but could benefit from a bit of salt or something to add a bit of tang. The beans were everything you expect from bbq baked beans. Tangy, cooked with a bit of pork. The potato salad didnât suit any of our pallets though and it went untouched beyond the single bite we each took. A biscuit and hush puppies basket was served as an appetizer with both bring very good. However, the butter served alongside tasted like it had been prepped and sitting in the fridge, absorbing the other food flavors from the fridge. Luckily neither really needed more butter. Overall Iâd say The Pit was your typical Carolina style bbq. It was neither fantastic nor terrible, just middle of the road.

This was our last lunch in Raleigh for this visit. The server was nice and kept on checking for our needs. The restaurant itself is also roomy and nicely decorated. It was quiet when we came. Unfortunately, my husband and I were so disappointed when we got what we ordered. My husband ordered bbq fries, I ordered brisket with side of mac & cheese and brunswick stew. I also ordered fried pimento cheese balls as starter and my sister in law ordered pulled pork with a side of beans and something else (I forgot the other sides). Bbq fries: this is hands down the worst fries ever made. Not only it was drenched in oil and tasted a bit like rancid oil, the meat was also dry and doesn't taste great. Brisket and sides: brisket was very soft, which is not bad, but it's heavily smothered in bbq sauce. I don't know if that's how they do it in the south, but I'd like to have the freedom of tasting my meat without the sauce. That being said, brisket was very fatty and has a bit of aftertaste to it. Mac and cheese was so dry and bland it's almost sad, and the brunswick stew was also bland and I have no idea what I was tasting in there. I tried a bit of my sis in law's pulled pork, my oh my that was the dryest pulled pork I've ever had. It has bitter aftertaste to it too. I don't know what they put in there! The cheese balls was ok, tasted very vinegar-y and the hush puppies tasted better than any other dishes that I had in this place. All in all, we both were disappointed by how it turned out.
