Nice little spot. Historic building, modern interpretation, and I absolutely LOVED the exhibit on the USS Raleigh and the city's flag (though I wondered why the signage doesn't say where the original is? The signage does say the city has it, but the two hanging on the wall certainly don't look old). In fact, it was seeing pictures of that exhibit that I came - I love old naval artifacts and the Reina Cristina gun mount was enough to get me to visit Raleigh by itself. I also liked the baseball exhibit quite a bit, and its creative arrangement. The AC was a super bonus for how hot the day was, and I always appreciate a free museum.
I took two stars away because the space feels slightly underserved/empty. There could be much more on display. Also, as clever as the booklets were for carrying through the exhibit as opposed to permanent signage, I found it difficult to reconcile what I was looking at with captions in the booklet, and felt awkward standing in front of artifacts reading a book rather than looking at the displays themselves. Additionally, I think there's a dark chapter of Raleigh history that was a missed opportunity to explore in the COR Museum. As it stands, the city's history was basically condensed to one wall, the USS Raleigh exhibit to the other but shared with a politics & education exhibit, and then the back half of the space was for baseball history. For a city as old as Raleigh, there's plenty more that could be told & shown in the first part.
Nevertheless, if you're downtown, spend the 30 minutes looking around in here. It's a great primer for the NC History Museum on the other side of...
