Sushi Kawa — Restaurant in Rancho Mirage

Food was delicious but service was subpar.

We went there for dinner the day before thanksgiving with wife, mom and mother in law.

The restaurant was not very big and have limited seatings. We had made reservation so didn’t need to wait but it seemed that most tables are reserved and they had to turn away any wall-in’s while we were there.

The sushi was delicious and well plated. They even have a tablet at each table so you can see the pictures before ordering. I really enjoyed the salmon belly sashimi, it was super fresh and smooth when you bite into it (like butter 🧈 melting right into your mouth). We also ordered some specialty rolls which were all nicely prepared.

The ingredients were super fresh which is crucial for any good sushi restaurant.

However the service was not as good as the food. The waitress forgot how many orders have been serviced and had to check with us midway. Also they don’t speak very good English so that added another layer of complexity in communication.

Sushi Kawa makes excellent sushi. Located on the edge of The River at Rancho Mirage Mall, this place is an easy drive from Palm Springs, Palm Desert, and anywhere in between. When we went, the rolls were excellent (everything tasted very fresh), and really the only complaint we had was the price. It was insanely expensive (some rolls were $30+) however, the presentation was excellent. You’re getting more than just a sushi roll for $30 - the rolls are massive and you even get some sides on the same plate. You will not need to order more than one, unless you’re super hungry. The sushi wasn’t the absolute best I’ve ever had, but I’m certainly not complaining. Taste-wise, I would go back because some of the things we got here were really good. As I said though, I just hope they do something about their prices!! That’s the one thing holding back this place (hence why there are 4 stars instead of 5). They lower those, and I would easily say this is one of the best sushi restaurants in the whole greater Palm...

Service.....hmmmm!?!?!?!?!☹️ It was good and it started well and ended well. I wasn't sure of alcohol policies so I asked if I can take the sake bottle but I perfer to leave it in the building and follow the policy 😊👍. Our server kept interrupting us and asked if we were celebrating anything near the end when they brought us mochi and after we had some, it was awkward and random. When all was paid and done the server showed up at the restroom and took a while to leave me alone and warned me about taking the sake bottle and said just wanted to let me know. Good to inform me but I was still sober and didn't like the repetitive and being followed to the restroom afterwards and felt stalled. I had to get going😬. Atmosphere was great!!!! Just cool the building please! It's summer and evening is getting warm enough in the desert.😅 Food...
