MOD?? Who knows. GOOD?? Most certainly! I'm not a fan of brick oven pizza, but if you simply must order some, there's really no better place for it in Redding, and for that matter, the north state, than this. Located on Dana Drive, across from the Mt. Shasta Mall (in that wretched little strip mall where the parking is always a cluster-screw of a nightmare surrounded by a Chinese Foot Binding wrapped inside a trip to Beirut circa 1983), this small chain does almost nothing but pizza. And that's fine. The set-up is the same format used by Chipotle and many other modern, “cafeteria-tandem” restaurants. You order at the counter, in front of a glass-covered, sneeze-guarded ingredients case, where you're greeted by one teenager—the “dough artist”, if you will, who, after perforating it with a giant comb device/marital aid, passes your unadorned pizza disc to another millennial for cheese application, who then hands it off to a third zit face who adds meat toppings, then on to yet another snot nose for the veggies, and finally to a slightly older-looking kindergartner who wraps it, and rings you, up. (Yes, it takes no fewer than six youngsters to make a pizza nowadays!) As for the finished product, it's remarkably good, easily in the top three of the greater-Redding area. With no thick crust option (Damn!), the standard, one-size-fits-all crust was very flavorful, reminiscent of pita bread, slightly yeasty—which I like—and not overcooked, thank God. The toppings were fresh-tasting and not un-generous were the quantities. Prices were reasonable, all things considered. I was there during the “off hours”, between three and five in the afternoon, and even then the place was teeming with customers from all the demographics, and not just teens. Not to mention the brisk pace of take-out orders that were flying out the door while I waited for my order to come up. If the noise levels become unbearable, umbrella-covered patio dining is available when the weather is nice. No fluke here; this eatery's popularity is a testament to its quality...
Read moreGreat place! Let’s be honest your not going to find a traditional New York or Chicago Style pizza here, but having the ability to customize your pizza the way you want and pair that with quality is a rare thing.
The crust is the best part of Mod Pizza for me. The bbq sauce which is one of the many you can choose from, is a bit underwhelming as it just mellows into the total taste in your mouth, but still great. The red sauce is where it is at for me! Very tangy head to it that slaps you in the mouth and just when your about the roll up your sleeves and give it your right hook; the sweetness an spice kicks in.
The staff that I have met the several times I have been there is a bit monotonous. All of them seem really young and eclectic. You have 2-3 people up in front that are in the topping area just droning away never saying a word. With 1-2 people on the right side of the front end expediting packing the pizzas in the correct order for the pizzas being place in the boxes as they are completed. The person cooking the pies are normally the most energetic, professional person in the front end. As you are wanting them go, turning and placing pie to or from the oven, you cant help but notice what seems to be 20 different employees walking in and out of the back of the restaurant. Just when you think you have seen them all, you see a new face.
