We ended up in a Goldilocks situation where the first restaurant we went to turned us away, the second was way too loud, then like magic SPH was there and just right. This restaurant is outstanding!
We came in, sat down, and were immediately impressed with the clean design of the location and the friendliness of the staff. I tried to sort through the draft menu, which has excellent detail and description, before opening up the regular menu and seeing some great specialty drinks. I got the campfire old fashioned and it just worked. The description looked like a lot, but it just worked together really well. The smoke laden presentation like the fire had just gone out was excellent and left a slight lingering smokiness that was complementary and not overpowering. The bartender balanced the ingredients with such a high level of skill that I would not be afraid to try anything on the drink menu.
The food items came quickly as we ordered them and the chef's skill matched the bartender. Simple things were done uncommonly well. The chicken wings had a perfect fry on them with a crispy exterior and not overcooked interior. As someone who has lived in the Carolinas, the Carolina style barbecue was more of a honey mustard barbecue than a real Carolina style, but was delicious. The seafood food flight my wife ordered was equally well prepared. I got the butcher's flight and it has to be the first time in decades for me that a grilled chicken breast from a restaurant was juicy and flavorful like that. The steaktips on it were great as well. The side house salads were really good and even the sauteed vegetables had significant flavor.
Our biggest regret was that we were too stuffed for dessert, even with two boxes coming home. The menu there had some interesting looking items that would no doubt be outstanding if the chef or team bakes as good as they grill and cook. Highly...
Read moreHighly recommend!!! My husband and I came to Rehoboth for the weekend and after trying to grab dinner on a busy Saturday night with many places being booked with waits of 45+ minutes, we found Sussex public house. Judging by their amazing menu, I was certain they wouldn't have any availability but I called anyway. I was absolutely shocked they had room for us, and we walked very quickly to get there! We were promptly greeted and requested an outdoor table which we only had to wait a few minutes for. My husband got their public intoxication cocktail and he said it was delicious. We ordered the short rib nachos to start, and they were incredible! My husband got a crabcake, and I got the coastal chicken. Being from Maryland, we are definitely crabcake snobs, but this was THE BEST crabcake we have ever tasted. My husband's exact words are "I can't explain it but it just taste like they really care about their crabcakes there". My chicken was cooked and seasoned perfectly, and so were our sides. My meal came with 2 sides, but I couldnt decide what I wanted, so I got a third. We got a cheesecake to share for dessert, and it was amazing. Our waiter, David, was so positive and sweet and we hope we see him again when we come back hopefully next year. It was truly the best dinner we have ever had. From the ambiance of the restaurant, to the service, to the food, it was absolutely perfect. I wish it weren't located 2.5 hours from home, because I would eat here...
Read moreAfter spending 7+ hours in a moving truck, and unload said truck to help a friend move into the area from out of state we were looking for something to eat and drink. The original idea was to go to a different place down the road but it was later in the evening and it was a 45 minute wait even though there were open tables outside, but that's for another review. Anyway we had passed Sussex on our way to our original destination and decided to head back there. We were seated in the bar area so the bartender was taking care of us. He was very friendly and helpful. I tried the steak tips appetizer, and the smothered burger. Both were amazing. For two guys who spent all day in a truck and the last bit of daylight unloading it was probably a little too upscale, but when my girlfriend and I go visit my friend and his wife once they're settled in that will be a place I take my girlfriend for a date night. I apologize for not remembering the name of the bartender but if the owners/management of Sussex Public House see this, the gentleman that was the closing bartender on 9-3-2022 was...
