Fat Rabbit — Restaurant in Richmond

We hired Fat Rabbit to make our wedding cake. They came highly recommended and our cake tasting was amazing. Our wedding cake design was exactly what we wanted - it looked just like what we envisioned and was so gorgeous - but, unfortunately, the cake itself was not great. The whole cake was dry and lacked flavor. There were barely any berries or ganache inside and the icing was very thick and stiff which meant you were eating more icing than cake. Many of our guests did not finish their slices. Our cake consisted of two custom flavors (straight-forward olive oil cake with berries and chocolate cake with berries and ganache), but in hindsight, we wonder if we should have gone with one of their “tried and true” flavors instead. Despite the disappointment in our cake overall, we really enjoyed working with the Fat Rabbit staff. They were so helpful, answered all of our questions, and executed our design request well. They were also diligent about my husband’s nut allergy and ensured the cake did not come into contact with allergens in the bakery; it was actually the first time he was able to eat wedding cake at a wedding. Cakes are definitely the speciality. They're beautiful and I loved the one I had (probably my favorite in Richmond so far and I've been to the classic spots). It was a chocolate cake with tahini in the icing and I wouldn't have known there was tahini in the icing if it wasn't advertised - that's a good thing! I think the tahini helped make the icing super smooth and just sweet enough. The chocolate was decadent, again without being too sweet. It was a more closed cake texture without being heavy or sticky. The hop tart is the pastry winner (others seem to still be in development). I was surprised by how much I liked the icing: it was sweet but that balanced the earthiness of the fresh fruit filling. Got a birthday cake. To be honest it was trash. The icing had soooooo much butter in it. Too thick for my liking . I paid like 65 dollars for this cake and to be honest I probably could have made a box cake taste better but I didn't have the time thought I would give this business a try. (Terrible mistake on my part)I reached out to let them know that the cake taste funny. Got a fast response back from the owner same day. To receive a 10% refund back. And I guess a free slice of whatever I wanted from them. Lol. The money was never the issue but I thought that it was very funny that you would waste your time to send me 6 dollars back plus the tip.
