I usually always give this place 5 stars but this visit I became annoyed by the host. This was during lunchtime on a Friday at 11:30. It was very hot outside and there were very few people outside. Those people looked like they were waiting for orders to go and not for a table.
I arrived before my friend and asked for a table for 2. There were several booths open but despite this, I was told that I could not be seated until the other person arrived. I was never given the chance to be asked if I wanted to sit down to order an appetizer while I waited for my friend. I had driven 3 hours to Richmond and was very thirsty by the time I arrived at the restaurant. I went back out into the heat and waited and when I knew that my friend was 10 minutes away I went back inside and once again asked if I could be seated. By this time my face was red and I was becoming overheated but the host refused to seat me and once again there were still several tables open. I was becoming angry because I said that I would like to sit down and go ahead and order drinks and an appetizer and was told not until my party arrived. But I went outside in the 96 degree heat and stood and by the time my friend arrived 10 minutes later I had become almost too hot to eat. As a matter of fact I did not eat the food I ordered. I had to carry it home.
I would totally understand if the place was full like it normally is and there was a waiting list like usual but there wasn't. No waiting list and several open tables. I was sat at the same table I watched be empty the entire time I was there. I was very disappointed by the hospitality on this visit.
The waitress and food were amazing as usual and worth the annoyance of inadequate hospitality. I have breathing issues and get overheated easily on hot and humid days and I almost had to go somewhere else despite driving to Richmond just to eat here. My friend drove from Maryland just to eat at this establishment. It's our favorite restaurant in Richmond.
I started to tell them that my friend cancelled just to be able to go ahead and get inside. I knew what he wanted and I could have...
Read moreI ventured to try Pearly's on a whim because they were touted as the best resturaunt in the Richmond area.
First off one of the factors that threw me about this place was the hours, closing a 3pm is almost a non starter for night owls or people who work the graveyard shift, which I fall into both categories, and is the only reason I am rating the service a four star. Otherwise the staff was polite, and service itself was quick. As far as the atmosphere I love it it did feel like an old style New York eatery without the advertisements or yankees/Mets fare on the walls.
Now to the geart of the matter the food plenty of options that sound delicious, even a blavk and white cookie harkening back to the New York vibe, but alas they were out when I was there, anyway what I ordered was the cabbage rolls as an app and for my meal was the benny goodman. The cabbage rolls were ok just a little sweeter than I am used to due to the raisin sauce. The meat on the inside though was barely seasoned which will be a reoccuring theme foodwise, the cabbage rolls came out in so much sauce it was almost like a soup.
So on to the Benny Goodman which was two latkes (potato pancakes) topped with smoked salmon two poached eggs salmon roe and a creamy sauce. Now let this be clear the potato pancakes were phenomenal in fact the entire dish was very good, it just none of the flavors popped the way I would have imagined not bland bunt not exactly exciting. Now dont get me wrong everything was clean, perfectly cooked, nice poached egg, perfect latkes not greasy. Compliments to the chef on technique but I was let down spice wise, especially from having of the S tier reputation and the fact I had to give up precious sleep to even try this resturaunt.
I would go again if I happened to be up and doing errands at lunch time. I just wont be loosing anymore sleep just...
Read moreMy first time at a jewish deli and I was blown away at the quality of the lox I ordered. My family and I went for breakfast (although I promise I will return to eat their signature sandwiches because all of them looked phenomenal).
I ordered the Benny Goodman, which was beyond incredible. The latkes were perfectly crunchy with a pillowy interior. The cold smoked salmon was beautiful, it had a great level of smoke and great texture. The salmon was enhanced by the light and creamy dill hollandaise and perfectly poached eggs. The salmon roe was just another positive texture element to a stunning version of an Eggs Benedict. The bonus of the dish was the lightly dressed side salad with pickled red onions and the challah bread. A perfectly light and sweet slice of challah bread was the best surprise of the dish! We also ordered the Cheese Blintz. The ricotta had an overwhelming orange flavor it a good way. I mention this because it's not subtle, the zest and flavor of orange is strong. I appreciate the balance of sweetness with the ricotta. As a sweet treat for a later time we snagged a single apricot rugelach...small piece for such a steep price. Everything else seemed well priced except this small nugget. The cinnamon raisin and plain bagels with plain cream cheese, but I would encourage you to be more adventurous with your food choices!
We sat in the corner by the front door; I loved the ambiance, but the music was quite loud. I was thankful to be close to the door for that reason. It took a while for us to be greeted at the table, but the food came quickly and was delicious.
I very much look forward to visiting again to enjoy a deli dog (those looked incredible) and the sandwiches! Thanks for a...
