My wife and I have become regulars for lunch at Hunan Noodle Bar, one of a small chain of restaurants specializing in Asian fare in the New Canaan & Ridgefield area. The ambience is nice, the service reliable and very friendly, and the food is consistently of a high standard. Hunan has lots of regular lunchers because of the good quality of the food and fair prices. We particularly like the fried pork dumplings and chicken satay as starters. We also like the scallion pancakes, although on a recent occasion they were a little thicker and stodgier than ideal. The house lo mein and fried rice are great accompaniments to any of the main courses. The beef and ginger and Thai red curry chicken are great main courses (I always find the latter to be offered with insufficient sauce, but the staff will always obligingly bring more if you ask for it). My one criticism about the menu is that there are so many options for combining things, including in the "set menus" that the choice may be overwhelming and confusing for the novice! The bar has a good selection of cocktails. Choose to dine at Hunan and you won't...
Read moreI went to Hunan for the first time yesterday. At the time there was hardly anyone in the establishment. So, I thought there wasn't an excuse for mediocre service, (keeping take-out orders in mind as well.) I found it hard to believe that I could not substitute vegetable fried rice for shrimp fried rice. I would have been willing to pay a little more for the substitution .However, I was told I would have to purchase a side order of shrimp fried rice in addition to the rice that they serve with the dish. I ordered the General Tso's chicken. While the chicken was crispy, the sauce was lacking flavor. The rice also was also lacking flavor. It was just okay. I noticed a few times that the wait staff would look over to our table. I'm assuming they were wondering if or when we would finish. However, no one checked to see if everything was okay with the food or drinks. Although first impressions are important, I am willing to try this place one more time. I did like the atmosphere and maybe they were just having an off day with the food and service. I will follow up with this review if...
