I stopped here recently for take out at around 11:45am and there were no customers which isn't really surprising on a Tuesday morning. I placed an order for 3 of the Non-Vegetarian Lunch Combos which, according to the menu is: "Appetizer Chicken Tikka, Butter Chicken, Chicken Curry, Served With Raita, Rice, Plain Naan, & Salad. Served with Kheer, Papadum." Now grammatically, this is kinda a mess, but what I actually received in a plethora of small containers and foil for each order was a Tandoori leg quarter (bone-in leg and thigh) a serving of Butter Chicken (about 3/4 cup), a serving of Chicken Curry (about 3/4 cup), a small cup of Raita (about 1/3 cup) about 1 cup of Basmati Rice, 2 pieces of plain Naan, and a single Gulab Jamun. Again, that was for each order. I can see the substitution of the Gulab Jamum for Kheer (less messy) and the Tandoori Chicken for Chicken Tikka, but the menu does not mention that they may substitute, and the person who took my order and delivered it made no mention either. We also did not receive the Salad or Papadum.
That said, wow! That's a lot of food for a lunch plate. Yes, it is a $20 lunch plate, but still. Two people could easily share one plate and come away not only full, but with leftovers. Our lunch is our main meal at home, and we had quite a bit left over (left overs for a few days of evening meals for the win!)
I asked for as "Mild" as they could make it spice-wise. I do not know if the person taking the order understood me as he kept saying "Medium" and I said, "Low on the hot spices please." What we received was a flavorful and mild Butter Chicken and a slightly more spicy Chicken Curry so it was more than acceptable and very tasty. The Tandoori Chicken was a let down, the pieces were from very tiny chickens -- the legs were less than 3 inches long and the thighs were maybe 3 by 1 3/4 inch -- and very dried out. I did have a 10 minute drive to bring everything home; but the tandoori chicken was basically room temperature so I'm not sure it was fresh. The Basmati rice was properly cooked, with a good nutty flavor and either turmeric or a bit of chicken base cooked in to give it a light yellow color (if it was saffron, it must have been the Mexican saffron because it added no flavor.) The naan was very crisp with a lot of chew. The Gulab Jamum, wasn't quite as good as some I've had, but it still maintained that interesting "soaked old fashioned donut" texture and the syrup is listed as flavored with rose water, but all I got was distinct citrus.
During the 20 minutes it took for my order to be prepared, two people came in to pickup orders but I saw no other guests. The location is, well, difficult is one description- awkward is another. They are in a small strip building directly across from Carl's Jr, behind Panda Express, which is behind the Chevron/Jack in the Box. The building is shared with Subway and Starbucks and behind and to the South of the La Quinta Inn.
So, the food that I received was, for the most parts good, the fact that substitutions were made without notification and two items were completely missing for each of the three orders when they were not, in any way, busy makes me mark them down. If ordering take out from them, I would strongly suggest people check their orders carefully before leaving. That was my fault because I simply missed items because I was handed a bag with 19 smaller packages in it and didn't really remember just what was supposed...
Read moreI felt like Indian food today. This restaurant was only 5 miles from where I lived so I decided to try it. I kept my expectations low because of a review that described the service as slow and I was hungry. I arrived around 1:25 pm, checked the menu quickly, but I had a general idea what I was going to have -- Dal. I ordered at around 1:33 pm (I wanted to see how long it would take) after asking a question from the waiter about which one to order, yellow or black. He said both were good and suggested the black. I ordered garlic Nan with it. He asked me if I needed rice, I told him if that was part of the Dal or not. He said, no, it is a separate item. I declined. I checked my phone for time as the waiter brought the food. It was 1:43 pm. I was happy that it only took 10 minutes. However, there were two customers at the time and it is kind of late for lunch and that could have contributed. As the waiter placed the Dal and Nan on my table, he left and came back with a bowl of rice. He stated that it was complimentary on the house. The food was really good; I enjoyed the taste and how...
Read moreI saw several 5 star reviews and decided to stop by. Ordered Lassi and Papadi chaat. The Lassi was of watery consistency and tasted pretty bad. I took a sip and asked the cashier to remake it Lassi is supposed to be thicker. They refunded me the money and took back the Lassi, so that was fine. 5 stars for customer service. But the Papadi chaat was worse. It was prepared in a way I have never seen any Indian restaurants prepare it. It had big chunks of potato, tasted garlic-y and had no sev poori. I just got disappointed and asked the server to pack the food so I could leave and I will pay for it. I showed him on my phone pictures of how a well prepared Papadi chaat looks like which is how restaurants also make it. His response was "This is how we make it.". I just wanted to pay and leave, so I asked him the same. I paid and left. The server didn't care to understand my concern. Look at the picture of the Papadi chaat we were served, and search for the same online. -4 stars for...
