KAUA HAWAIIAN BBQ — Restaurant in Riverside

After driving past this place a number of times since opening, I decided to finally stop by and try it. This place is legit. The restaurant was very clean and I really liked the decor and vibe. I tried the Garlic Shrimp and it was fantastic! It was a little less buttery/garlicky than I’m used to, but the portion size was good with plenty of veggies to go with it. I wish I had a larger portion of rice, but they are probably doing me a favor with the calories keeping it at one scoop. I can’t wait to try the other items on the menu. It was pretty busy when I ate here and I hope it stays that way. Nice restaurant and great staff, but the food was really sad. I got the BBQ chicken mini meal. Firstly I will say that the meat was EXCELLENT, tender and flavorful, practically falling apart, melt in your mouth juicy... but the sides were not good at all and made it all a really gross texture. The rice was mushy and overcooked, the veggies were just soft, squishy overcooked cabbage, no crunchy broccoli or carrots or anything to provide a textural difference. The macaroni was bland and a little weirdly chunky? I got the spam Musubi and it was mostly mushy rice and a slim piece of spam. Da Kine island comfort food in La Sierra. Glad to have Hawaiian BBQ close to home now. Good stuff, similar to the chain Ono Hawaiian. I got the chicken plate with both grilled and katsu chicken, along with a side of Spam Musubi. The Mac salad was good, the white sticky rice was on point, and the teriyaki sauce they serve on the side was pretty good as well. Will be back soon to try other menu items.
