First a quick note on the restaurant before I rave about their wedding cakes -- This is one of my new Roanoke favorites. Its cute, its hip, it gives you a chance to get into Roanoke city, the food is great, and you can eat gourmet cake by the slice! I no longer live in Roanoke, but this is my go-to to meet friends every time I am back! Now onto the wedding cake -- If you want world-class cake for your wedding, look no further than Evie. We got a 3-tier cake with Marie Antoinette (raspberry) and Lemon Chiffon. We ordered a lot of extra cake (COVID wedding, not many came...) and we RAN OUT. As the Bride, I only got a quick bite during the cake cutting and no more. Many guests had a slice of each, many saying that they usually don't even like wedding cake, but that they cannot determine which of ours is the best because it was so delicious. I also want to comment that our wedding cake looked like a dream! It came out exactly as I had described to Evie and I could not be happier with the photos. It may look like a stock cake I found on google, but nope, that is the real cake we had in our September wedding at Big Spring Farm in Lexington! We had our florist leave her some flowers to put into the cake and Evie may have outdone our florist! Evie was easy to work with. She is so professional but also so nice. I would highly recommend her to everyone having any event anywhere in the area.

Evie's is a really cute, comfortable little restaurant and bakery nestled in Old Southwest Roanoke, seemingly with no other retailers around. The food was tasty, service was excellent and the atmosphere was pleasant with fresh flowers on the tables and wall decor that keeps your interest. Everyone in my party reported enjoying the food, and we salivated over the delicious looking desserts, which are the strength of this establishment. The prices are a little on the high side for lunch, but that's understandable with the current price of the quality ingredients that go into the food. I chose the California melt, which included sauteed mushrooms, onions and green peppers, with melted cheese, fresh tomato, spinach and avocado. The customer chooses the bread and a side. I chose the melt on focaccia with a Greek pasta salad. The salad was an excellent balance of an acidic dressing with feta, olives and seasonings. The focaccia was a little soft for the fillings, but it was still absolutely delicious, just easy to fall apart. The dessert menu is twice the size of the entrees, and range from all kinds of cakes, cookies, assorted brownies, cream puffs, assorted fresh pies and more. It's worth the stop to try it out, especially for the excellent desserts!

My only regret is that I did not know about this place sooner!! My story about finding out about this place is an interesting one. I run an elevator museum and youtube channel about elevators. They actually invited me to come in and see their elevator via Instagram. This has basically started a life long friendship between me and the owner, Amelia who is just one of the most beautiful human beings you will come across. Now about the restaurant. It is in an old grocery store that has been totally refurbished and converted into a restaurant. It has a GREAT Roanoke charm to it! They have a wide selection of food but what really sets them apart is CAKE!! And not just any cake. The "Death by Chocolate" cake is possibly the best cake I have EVER had in my life! When I eat hot food here, I get a hamburger and hot dogs. The hamburgers and hot dogs they serve up are great! cooked properly. Nice and juicy. Just amazing. What really sets this restaurant apart from others is the people. Amelia and her staff just are wonderful people. Always love going in there to see them!! Oh yeah they have a cool elevator too! (it is not public its for staff only) Amelia, if you read this, you are an amazing person.

In the last 9 months, I’ve ordered 3 cakes from the Wildflour Bakery and not one of them were the correct cake.

My husband and I were very impressed with the taste, pricing, and selection of Evies cakes after our wedding cake tasting last year. Unfortunately, our cake tasting is where our positive experience with Evie and the Wildflour Bakery stopped.

Rehearsal Cake: We received the wrong rehearsal cake, but were able to go back and get the correct one. No harm, no foul. Including to show that confusion is the only thing consistent with Evie’s Cakes.

Wedding Cake: We ordered a honey oat and a “better than sex” cake with CHOCOLATE frosting and CHOCOLATE fudge filling. Evie wrote it into a contract, had us sign it, and then signed it herself. On our wedding day we were delivered a VANILLA frosted and filled cake. After the honeymoon, I emailed Evie indicating my disappointment. She asked what she could do to make it better and the answer was nothing. The wedding had been over for a week and the cake was long gone. I asked her to be better for the next customer, because there was no doubt that her cakes were the best tasting in town.

Seven months later- she is not better.

Birthday Cake: I coordinated many of the details for our wedding, but my dessert loving husband picked out the cake. When asked if he was excited for the wedding, he joked that he was excited for the cake. He was excited for the cake that he spent an hour crafting with Evie at the tasting. Since he didn’t get his cake at our wedding, I thought it would be nice if I got him the cake he picked out for his birthday. It would have been nice, but Evie didn’t respond to my email or phone calls. After 2 weeks, I called Wildflour to place my order. The bakery couldn’t take any special orders and if Evie didn’t respond to my request, the bakery was out of options for me. Since my husband’s birthday was in a week and the bakery had no way to contact Evie, I ordered a honey oat cake with chocolate frosting/filling.

Fast forward to last night, my husband’s birthday dinner. He cuts into the cake and it has coconut filling, not chocolate. He doesn’t eat coconut… Happy Birthday!

I can’t express the frustration well enough. Not one, not two, but THREE wrong cakes. Three bad experiences and over $600 spent on messed up cakes.

I implore you to take your...

Evie’s Bakery & Bistro, while still Wildflower 4th St., has been for almost 1.5 decades my go-to place for tasty vegetarian dishes and over-the-top coconut-lemon and carrot cakes. The cakes, also sold by the slice, are fantastic for special occasions like birthdays or just-for-fun treats.

Recently, I’ve started stopping for take-out portions of one of their terrific made-on-location soups - Mushroom Bisque, New England Clam Chowder, Tomato-Cheddar, and White Bean Chicken Chili. All come with an added square of bread, disposable eating utensils, and napkin.

The name change from Wildflower 4th to Eve’s prompted remodeling, making the dining, display cases, and checkout point lighter and airy. The walls, still decorated with local artwork, share space with funky repainted vintage items such as the gold-painted bicycle above the main door.

Table service varies from excellent to adequate. At times, I think that the kitchen is slow, which leads to slow table service. And, let’s face it, Evie’s is sometimes short of staff. Wait staff is hard to hire these post-pandemic days. Overall, the Bistro is best visited when diners are ready for a leisurely meal. Evie’s is not a good place to stop in for a quick bite!

All parking is on the street, with most areas marked as “Two-hour-parking, 8 am-5 pm, Monday through Friday.” There are no handicap-accessible parking spots and no curb cuts. However, to the right of Evie’s, a driveway curb cut leads to the sidewalk and a quick left leads to the sidewalk and...

First time eating here, had heard good things. Everything was going well we sat down ordered drinks and ordered food not long after. Wait time for food for a four top is roughly 20 min. First my entree came out before the salad i ordered, which i have never had that happen before. Second my wife's entree as well as mine came out before my little girls kids meals. It took an extra 5 minutes for my girls to get their simple kids meals consisting of mostly sides ( broccoli, mashed potatoes, Mac and cheese, tenders ) again never had that happen before either. So by the time i ate my salad, my food on the table was cold. I told Megan and she just grabbed it away and took it off the bill, did not ask if i wanted another or if i wanted something else and didnt hear from her the rest of the evening, she passed me off to a different waitress. Meanwhile we had ordered a couple of their signature cocktails off their menu. My old fashioned was the worst I've ever had it tasted like orange water, which was surprising because i watched her read the directions off her phone while making it. I also went up to see what type of cakes they had and was talking with two People at the counter i looked down at the menu to see what was in them and both people disappeared, for five minutes i stood there with no help. I would have loved to actually try my pasta, but unfortunately i don't think i will be revisting....
