Had breakfast here both days that we were in town for the Maine Lobster Festival. Each day we arrived about 9:30 am and had a minimal wait, chose to sit at the counter both days.
My scrambled eggs were cooked with such finesse, ever so slightly on the moist side, just how I like it, and super fluffy. The breakfast potatoes were crisp & perfectly seasoned, and let me tell you, I was born in MA but raised in the south, so I've had and made plenty of sausage gravy, Home Kitchen had the absolute, most delicious sausage gravy I've ever had. The next day I enjoyed the French Toast, and it was great. Their own house made bread had soaked up just enough egg mixture to make for a slight custard middle, exactly how French Toast should be.
Hubs had the corned beef hash with over-easy eggs, which was flawlessly prepared, and he tried the polenta. A server told him lots of customers like the polenta with their maple syrup drizzled on it, so he tried it and realized it was really good!
It was fascinating to watch the employees coordinating duties, the kitchen and staff ran like a well-oiled machine! Everyone was so pleasant and informative.
We're looking forward to revisiting Maine for so many reasons, and another meal or two at Home Kitchen is on that list!
If you go & Debbie is there, tell her Debbi...
Read moreWe stopped at Home Kitchen Cafe during a recent trip to Rockland and had such a great experience. They don’t take reservations, and there were a few parties ahead of us (it’s a popular spot, especially on weekends), but the space inside is pretty big, so we only waited about 10–15 minutes.
The menu was massive, especially for lunch — everything from biscuits and gravy to burgers, omelets, pancakes, you name it. My husband ordered the biscuits and gravy after seeing all the rave reviews, and it did not disappoint. The portion was huge, it was so flavorful, and the biscuit (homemade, like the rest of their stuff!) was incredible.
I got the huevos rancheros, which were good, just not exactly what I was in the mood for. It leaned a little too “healthy” for me that morning, and the sauce + beans combo made the dish a little too soupy. Still tasty, but I definitely had some food envy. We also ordered a side of the herby potatoes and a cinnamon bun, both of which were delicious, especially those potatoes. And the coffee was strong!
The restaurant was bright and lively, and the staff just seemed genuinely happy to be there. Our server was amazing — super friendly, on top of everything, and constantly refilling our coffee without us having to ask. We’d absolutely come back next time we’re...
Read moreThis was our favorite meal in Maine! This unassuming, humble cafe is cranking out some of the best food we’ve ever had! We came around 1pm on a Monday and while the place was packed, we were able to get seated at the counter fairly quick! Staff was friendly and our server was Kim and she was such a delight! Very attentive and we never went long without a refill on our drinks!
Both my husband and I ordered the Haddock Sandwich with cheese and chips. This was simply the greatest bite of food we had in all of Maine! The in house bakery brioche bun was buttery and soft, the fish was pan fried to perfection and the Tatar sauce and cheese added a tangy zip to the sandwich that made you want more and more. It was the perfect fish sandwich. We also got a blueberry pancake to share and it was fluffy and sweet with real Canadian maple syrup on the side. This thing was packed with blueberries!
The whole menu is whimsical and fun and everything sounded good. It was hard to choose what to eat but I think we made the right choice.
The iced coffee was strong and they had almond milk available! Restaurant was clean and cozy. Bathrooms are clean and well stocked. This was a wonderful stop on our travels and I will think about that sandwich for a...
