Today I stopped by Sonny's Italian Kitchen in Roselle for lunch. This is a newer place only been open about 5 months. I started out with the meatball sandwich and it was a gem. There were 3 big meatballs inside of some soft fresh bread. I bit into the sandwich and the meatballs were so tender and full of flavor. The sauce was outstanding and after 2 or 3 bites I noticed that it wasn't your standard marinara sauce it was a thicker meat sauce. The meat sauce really put this sandwich over the top. After I was done eating I went and started to talking to the owner Jimmy and he explained to me that they go through a lot of meatballs, so they are made fresh every day. They are also using Liborio bread. After talking to Jimmy I was ready for dessert and I ordered an Italian beef with sweet peppers. The beef was thin and tender with a nice blend of seasoning and the peppers just melted in my mouth. It was a damn good Italian beef sandwich. Overall a really good place with a really nice owner. I will definitely go back because as I was leaving people were getting these breaded steak sandwiches that...
Read moreI moved away from chicago, roughly 11 years ago, and when I come back to visit family, I'm always happy to support local businesses; Especially Italian places like this... saw the reviews, so I thought I'd give it a shot before i caught my flight early tomorrow morning. It's definitely got a family/chicago vibe. I got an italian sub, which was lacklustered and nothingspecial. The bread was super dry; almost rubbery and almost stale. I simply asked the man (who appeared to be the owner) if he had any Mayonnaise? He said they don't have mayonnaise, and then a female employee looked back at him and laughed as if it's SUCH AN OUTRAGEOUS question ask for a mayonnaise for a sandwich....Typically, my motto is not to take things personally, but this one kinda irked me. Needless to say, i'm not gonna go back or recommend it to...
Read moreWatery tomato-based meat pasta sauce, not much flavor, barely any meat, $11.50 for maybe $8 worth of product, pasta itself was very average. Purchased meatballs ala carte for $6, got 2 small meatballs maybe worth $3.
So, skip the pasta and sauces, they're garbage. I did not have a sandwich, but maybe that's the only they do right here, so just try that I guess.
Also, very difficult to tell when they're open, they don't have an open sign and always look like they're closed because business is so bad they never have cars parked out front.
Very disappointing because this area really needed a great Italian place with home-cooked recipes at good prices, but they really blew it. It's like they don't even eat their own food and just buy everything in a can and heat it up just to try to make...
