Poke is just deconstructed sushi. The rice is sushi rice, and they have some Asian sides/garnish (wasabi, seaweed salad, cucumber salad, crab stick salad, pickled ginger, etc) but there is not enough rice in a "two protein" bowl.
Furthermore, the fish is cubed, not sliced, the optional ingredients are strange but Japanese/Hawaiian themed, etc. I get that Poke is Hawiian, but compared to chirashi bowls, there's just not enough of it, in parts or in whole,to justify the price/experience. The seating was cheap, largest table was a 4 top, no booths. Drink was a soda fountain. Ambient music was neither Hawiian or Japanese, nor top pop (thank God) but was just... The whole place gives off this hipster vibe.
The biggest letdown for me was i announced I had never been here before, there was no immediately locatable paper menu, the digital menu reads from right to left, and the ingredients list offers a million possible combinations but no suggestions that I saw. I kinda picked a few ingredients that did go well together, but had no idea how it would turn out. It wasn't till I paid at the register, on the side of the counter, that I saw the paper menu hidden out of sight, WHICH CONTAINED SUGGESTED BOWLS! Maybe 5-6 of them, each with more accessory ingredients than the three I chose... Had these been noticable on the digital menu I would have picked one to see what kinds of tastes they thought went well together, and based on the number of ingredients probably a larger quantity of food.
I'll eat there again, for one of the special bowls, but won't go out of my way. Probably at least a few months until I am in the neighborhood at food time. So overall, meh. I prefer chirashi but I'll give it another go before striking it...
Read moreI’ve been coming here for years now and sad to say I will not be returning. I order the Poke Life Bowl consistently and decided to get a few bowls for myself and my family. I pay for 4 bowls at the front as you normally do before going down the line. As soon as I make it down the line the guy helping me sees there is no salmon so he goes to the back, comes back to me and says there’s no salmon and the person who normally has the salmon has stepped out and isn’t there? Shouldn’t all employees be able to replenish things? Also it’s only 12:30pm and they open at 11am. How are they out of so many things so early in the day? So I’m forced to pick different toppings - went with tuna and shrimp (since they were also out of abalone). The employee made one of the bowls wrong so I was waiting for an extra few minutes while he is scrambling around while the other two girls sat around just talking to each other when they could have assisted him or helped finish the toppings for the 3 other bowls. Anyways, after what felt like an eternity being there, I come home to find that there is random chicken pieces in ALL bowls (when I asked for shrimp and tuna) not to mention a METAL SPRING in one of the bowls. All of the bowls were inconsistent which is weird considering I ordered 4 of the same thing. Some had little to no rice, other bowls barely had protein, some had 3 leaves of spring mix. I’ve called repeatedly to the restaurant to complain and no one has answered. Extremely disappointed with this place and how down hill...
Read moreThis was our first go at a "Poke" restaurant and I have to say we are hooked! We've not tried other ones, but Poke Life is really good. Simple, but trendy clean decor, fresh tasting colorful food, what more could you ask for? So, if you are a Poke novice...you basically go in and pick your size bowl (small, medium or large). With a small you get 2 proteins, medium - 3, large - 4. So you pick your base first (white rice, brown rice, spring mix), then add your proteins (it's basically raw fish, salmon, tuna, spicy tuna, scallop mix, shrimp, etc), then you add your ingredients (fresh jalapenos, corn, edamame, mango, pineapple, cilantro, crab salad mix, etc), then you pick your sauce and they mix it up for you. The taste is very fresh and different, but excellent! A warning to dieters: This food is marketed as healthy food, but you can easily run up your calories to well over 1000 for a bowl and the sodium can also be well over 1000mg so do your research and choose wisely. The main items that will get you is the rice base (choose spring mix instead) and the sauces (I think the Ponzu is the least fattening and sodium content)...some of the sauces are absolutely LOADED with fat and cals so again, do your research or you won't be eating as healthy as you thought you were. All that being said, we had our first Poke bowl a couple of months ago and I have eaten here 5 times...
