What you need to know: Great subs, locally owned and operated, East Coast flair.
Hoody's is two minutes off of the 620 exit of I35 in the back corner of a non descript area that has a dry cleaners, Indian grocery store and some others. It is right around the corner from Round Rock High School. I had read the reviews on this place but was still skeptical when I first walked in. Suffice it to say, I have been back many times and one time it was twice in the same day. I am a Hoody's convert.
When you first walk in you realize you are dealing with an east coast transplant. Some people wear their sports allegiances on their sleeve, at Hoody's it's on the wall. But mixed in with those posters of the Phillie's and Notre Dame, you see the local kids baseball teams that Hoody's has supported over the years. It is this kind of true Americana that many chain restaurants would love to recreate and have you believe, but at Hoody's it is honest and true. I am a big believer in locally owned and operated, and Hoody's is my sandwich shop now.
So about the food. When you arrive you head to the counter. The menu boasts a standard lists of sandwiches. Pastrami, meatball, ham, turkey, all available in large or small. Their signature sandwich is the Philly Cheesesteak and it delivers, just a great sandwich. An added bonus for you east coasters, he carries Utz chips along with Tastycakes. Now some of you will roll your eyes at that, but put down your pretentiousness and enjoy what is a great neighborhood sub shop.
Your sandwich is prepared on bread that is made on site and contains a little less sugar than most. I've been fortunate to get there on off hours, right after a lunch rush, and just before folks would normally eat dinner, so I've been able to get right in and out. If you live in Round Rock, what have you been waiting for? If you don't and find yourself here for one of the many sports tournaments, or are headed to the Express games and don't want...
Read moreIf you are looking for a Philly Cheesesteak in Austin, you really need to make a pilgrimage to Round Rock and check out Hoody's Subs.
Yes, they have the right rolls. Yes, they use real ribeye steaks. Yes, they have grilled onion and peppers, mushrooms too if that's your thing. Yes, they have wiz, provolone, and America cheese. It may not have come from Henry Street in the City of Brotherly Love, but Hoody's is the real deal.
If you go between 11:30 am - 1:00 pm, be prepared for a wait in line, and yes, the line can be 20-30 deep. It's worth the wait. I like to get mayo on my cheese steak, and they have this sweet pepper relish that is really tasty.
For my latest visit, I had the small Cheesesteak ($7.75 Large is $15.50). I wanted to also try their Italian sub, which is served cold (Small $7.50 Large $15.00)
The Cheesesteak was perfect. It is so nice to taste one that is made properly. The Italian, meh. Not my thing. In full disclosure, I went to Hoody's a day after visiting Home Slice Pizza in Austin, which has the best Italian Hoagie in the city.
My friend from Philly likes the Meatball Sub and the Grilled Chicken Sub (Both are Small $7.75 Large $15.50).
They also have another Philly treat there, Tastykakes. Perfect as a side along with chips.
If you haven't been there, make the trip. You can...
Read more9/21/21 - I have been hovering over this business for a week now. Waiting for myself to be in the mood for a sub. Normally, I don't eat hardy subs, I prefer a tuna wrap. I recently out did my taste buds with tuna wraps from subway. I am with child so I guess the child and I decided no more Subway.
In any case the baby and I decided to try Hoody Subs (I went online and saw they had a Tuna Sub). I'm not a fan of bread and I could have chosen without the bread, thus making it a salad, but I went ahead anyway to provide a real review.
&& let me tell ya, I don't regret it! The Tuna sub (with everything on it besides the hot pepper) was divine! I loved the bread and the cheese and the veggies. YUM! I probably ate it faster than I got the order. I walked in, ordered, and they got me my sub fast! Like, literally, no wait time. That being said I really enjoyed the attention they provided to me as a first time customer && the sub itself WOW (my mouth is still watering). Overall the taste of the quality food and price $10 ( that includes Tuna sub, large salt-n-vinegar chips, and a large drink) was all WORTH IT! (and yes, without a doubt, way effing better than Subway- I will never eat a subway wrap again). I approve (and so does my little fetus in...
