Taqueria Chapala — Restaurant in Round Rock

My wife and I dined here for dinner on Saturday, January 12, 2019, after I noticed a very crowded parking lot earlier in the day, and a new sign on the building with the restaurant's name. The decor is typical for any restaurant in a strip center -- generic tables and chairs. We were greeted warmly by the person behind the counter and told to seat ourselves.

Menus, and the requisite chips and salsa were soon at our table. We both ordered iced tea -- very flavorful and didn't require much if any sweetener. The menus have a combination of Chihuahuan and Sonoran-style items, ranging from breakfast items, to tacos and tortas, along with other favorites. It was difficult to choose what to order (as everything sounded tasty) and my wife decided on sampling three tacos (chicken, beef fajita, and cactus) while I was more adventurous and ordered the Alhambra plate (beef fajita, ham, bacon, and cheese), with sides of rice and beans. The food was much better than expected, bordering on the line of excellent to sublime -- full of flavor and cooked to perfection. The tacos were larger than expected and I had to help my wife finish the last taco (her loss).

Sad, been going going here for years because it was my go to for authentic Mexican food even though the service has always been lacking. After today I’m done. I go here specifically for shrimp cocktail and today it tasted sweet like orange soda or juice. Told the server and she just gave us a blank stare, told her we don’t want it and she left it on the table and walked off. Asked if they changed the recipe or if it was just a mistake in the batch and she just shrugged, never went and asked the kitchen, it’s ok to not know the answer as long as you try to find out. Waters sat empty half the time we were there never hot refills, had to hunt waitress down to get napkins. Just overall bad experience. Was never offered the menu back to get something else to eat. Shrimp cocktail stayed on the tab and I left hungry and very disappointed.
