老严烧烤 (Lao Yan BBQ) — Restaurant in Rowland Heights

The owner of this wonderful restaurant is from Yunnan, China — the beautiful “homeland of clouds.” You can truly taste the spirit of Yunnan in every dish. The ingredients are fresh, the cooking is traditional, and the flavors are absolutely authentic.

We ordered the Yunnan Breaded Tofu, Special Beef Skewers, Special Lamb Skewers, and Egg Fried Rice. The tofu came first, and before the plate even hit the table, the aroma was already dancing around us. The golden crispy crust,, looked irresistible. One bite and we were hooked — perfectly crispy outside, soft and flavorful inside. It awakened our appetite in the best way!

Then came the beef and lamb skewers, and they were simply outstanding. The owner shared that they hand-select fresh meat every morning, marinate it for at least five hours, and only then start grilling. The chef’s control of the grill is masterful — smoky, lightly charred edges with juicy, tender meat inside. Rich but not greasy, every bite left us wanting more.

We ended our meal by sharing a warm and fluffy egg fried rice — the perfect way to wrap up a delicious journey.

Absolutely loved this place! The skewers were packed with flavor, grilled perfectly with just the right amount of char. The lamb was tender and juicy, the chicken had a great spice kick, and the seafood was super fresh. They have a great variety of meats, veggies, and even tofu options — something for everyone.

The seasoning was bold without overpowering the natural taste of the ingredients. You can tell everything is made fresh to order. Loved the dry spice rub they offered on the side — really authentic.

The atmosphere was lively and casual, perfect for hanging out with friends. Staff was friendly, attentive, and gave great recommendations. Prices were reasonable for the quality and portion sizes.

The skewers came out fresh and were really tender! Now I'm not someone who can really handle their spice that well, but man all the different skewers and dishes were addicting with the mix of spices that they used. Staff were also super nice in that they accommodated our party of 4 by pulling a table out that originally sat 3. There was also a large party at the back of the restaurant, but even with them, the staff were pretty attentive...
