Happy Family Restaurant - Rowland Heights — Restaurant in Rowland Heights

I tried this place and thought it was alright, until I saw the following report from the San Gabriel Valley Tribune today:

Three dead nymph cockroaches floating in water in a large pot with cabbage were among the reasons a health inspector shut down a vegetarian Chinese restaurant in Rowland Heights in December.

The discovery was made on Dec. 19 at Happy Family Restaurant, 18425 Colima Road No. 2F-B in Rowland Heights. In a report on file with the Los Angeles County Public Health Department, the inspector also made note of:

One live adult cockroach on the floor by the mechanical warewasher. Three dead cockroaches on the floor by the mechanical wareawsher. Two dead cockroaches on the floor by the mop sink. One dead cockroach on the bottom shelf of the interior of the one-door reach-in cooler. Three dead cockroaches on the floor by the rice cooker. Two dead cockroaches on the floor behind the ice machine. Two dead cockroaches on the floor below shelving in the small storage room. One dead cockroach on the floor behind the chest reach-in freezer in the small storage room. One dead cockroach on the floor in the women’s restroom. Cockroach fecal marking in between the white wall and metal splash guard...

Lunch special are about $5.25 per dish where you get an array of different combos. Rice, congee, toasted chinese bread, and soup. My family and I use to come here all the time, but the service went down and they're food quality is just not up to par from what we are use to.

Even so, we couldn't pass up on the special..we came and each entree literally came out 10-20 minutes at a time. I like it when my plate of food as a mixture of different variety. What wounded up happening is I get one plate of vegetables..finish it and then another will come out.

What really ruined my experience here was that they totally forgot to bring out our last plate of food? They were quite busy during lunch but looking all around us everyone got there food except us? The odd part was that the lady serving us remembered us from before and was super courtesy and nice but the mistake happened to us? I hate to give good customer service low scores but what happened really was...

Rude, lazy customer service and force you to tip. Came in 2 hours before closing time l, the waitress send me away rudely no Hi or greeting anything. She is obviously just want to close early.This was my 1st experience. As I am mostly vegetarian been traveling to Diamond Bar so I came here the second time as it is next to Ranch 99 This time another waitress force me to tip 30% after I paid because I ate more than $45 worth of food? Which is illegal. I am a starving student just got paid haven’t a first meal out for a long while. The food is average not bad and not good. Since Ranch 99 is right next door. I would just started buy my own food and cook. I came to this restaurant because awhile back there was a GOOD vegetarian restaurant with the same Chinese name. It was close due to pandemics.
