Me and my husband were very eager to try out Brick and Bones in Rowlett..We chose to sit out on the patio as the weather was beautiful and breezy. I ordered a sweet tea, my husband ordered a DP. For our entrees, I ordered the 3 piece chicken which was deep fried ($11 for 3 pieces of chicken. Sides are not included) so I also ordered the mashed potatoes ($7) My husband ordered The Forbidden Chicken it’s described on the menu as marinated chicken served with forbidden rice medley. His chicken was very juicy; however, it was spicy. 🌶️ He didn’t mind it too much, but agreed he would probably regret it later. He can normally handle spicy foods. My chicken was very good, however, they dump paprika all over it, so it is QUITE messy. With every bite, you snort paprika up your nose. And it’s all over your hands. Chicken was very tender, I will say. But overall, the chicken was good. Mashed potatoes are usually my 1st go-to side item. But I was so wrong. The mashed potatoes are EXTREMELY spicy. So spicy my lips, mouth and throat were on fire. I don’t care for extreme spicy foods. It seems just about everything on their menu (including sides, are spicy, ie even their Mac n cheese is spicy). I would prefer more foods that are NOT as spicy as some people cannot eat spicy foods, me included. I will be up sick all night most likely. Everything spicy and no flavor. And if you ask for salt and pepper, they bring it to you in a condiment cup and you have to sprinkle it with your fingers. I was expecting little salt and pepper packets.
Everything seems to be extremely overpriced for what you get. All sides are priced separately. I don’t really care for this tactic. The menu is very limited. No pictures of food, so it’s hard to tell what you’re getting. Menu is very limited.
Service could use some improving. Our waitress NEVER came out to check on us, we got ZERO refills (and with my mouth on fire, I really needed a refill or at the very least some water), and for 2 people our plastic setups included: 1 fork, 1 knife and 2 spoons. We were going to request more, however, she never came back outside. Another waitress had frequently visited her tables outside and at one point, I got her attention and motioned her over to our table, and she nodded her head and walked inside, instead of coming to our table. We assumed she was going inside to locate our waitress. But still we waited and waited. Finally after about 10 minutes, we were just ready for the check so we could go. Finally our waitress came over and asked if we needed anything. I told her “just the check at this point. It would have been nice for enough forks and knives for 2 people and also refills, but this is the first time we’ve seen you since we ordered our meal”. Someone totally different brought us our food. All she said was, “I’ll get you the check”. No apology nothing. Then a totally different person brought us our check. My husband asked, do we pay here or inside? She said she could take care of it. So he gave her his card. She left. 15 minutes later, we were still sitting there, waiting for my husbands card and so he could sign the check! Finally, we left our table and walked inside. I told the person behind the counter that we had been sitting outside and that we gave our credit card to someone 15 minutes ago and we were still waiting. She looked around the counter and didn’t see it. So she tracked our waitress down who came to us and said, “I was told they had already closed out your check”. Then the person who had first taken our card outside walked up and gave our waitress our card! So I said,”you know, you really shouldn’t be walking around with patron’s cards in your pocket. It really is fishy looking”. She popped off with a smart remark, like it wasn’t her fault. She didn’t take responsibility or even apologized. She just said, “have a nice day” in a very snarky derogatory voice.
We really wanted for Brick and Bones to be “our place” for date nights, but we won’t be back. It would be better if they served more “down...
Read moreI've decided to be fairly generous in my review and give this an overall 2-star rating - mainly because the food is truly that good...however, getting seated only to be ignored for over 20 minutes is a huge problem to me. We have been to this location twice now. Regarding the first visit, I can honestly excuse them for taking so long to get a server to our table. It was a Friday night and they had live music, and it didn't seem like many people were interested in dining outside like we were. Okay, fine. The food was amazing - the location in Deep Ellum was my first B&B experience - and I was excited to check out the "backyard" version of the restaurant, especially since it was local to me. Overall, our first experience here was a good time. The whole outdoor "backyard" atmosphere was ideal for a place like this, and the live music was enjoyable and added to the general relaxed vibe. We did have to wait quite a while for someone to come visit our table initially, but we really were enjoying the ambiance and each other's company, so it wasn't too off-putting.
The second time, though? We were sat right in front of the outdoor bar, the bartender brought us two glasses of water, and then no one ever returned to our table. We sat there, observing the bartender and another server, as they took orders from other tables, yet no one came back to check on us, nor gave us an opportunity to order anything beyond water. This second visit took place on a Sunday, early evening-ish, and the place wasn't a bit crowded. After well over 20 minutes of being ignored by the staff, we decided to go somewhere else for dinner. The same server who originally sat us was walking back outside as we were leaving, waving with a very enthusiastic, "bye! Thanks, you guys!" while we exited the patio, completely bewildered by the fact that no one seemed to notice our presence while we were there.
Perhaps their to-go system works more efficiently than traditional dining, but this was not the experience I expected from Brick & Bones, and it's not one I would tolerate further. I don't ordinarily share reviews from negative dining experiences, but I feel like management should be aware, and hopefully they will correct this for future guests of this establishment. This was truly disappointing because, as I mentioned above, the food is really great here - if...
Read moreWho would have thought the historic Oliver house in Rowlett would be transformed into a Mexican-Inspired Fried Chicken spot? Not me!
Brick and Bones Backyard is a blue house on the corner of Main St. in Rowlett, Tx, that has been transformed into something magical. This Mexican-Inspired "chicken shop" is offering fried & rotisserie chicken, classic cocktails, and live music in a rustic setting.
The menu is diverse and offering all things chicken that is brined 24 hours, fried and can be order breaded or naked( for the gluten-free in you). They also have rotisserie chicken, tenders, sandwiches, salads, bowls and wings, along with unique sides. Poblano mashed potatoes, habanero mac n cheese, mexican corn, etc... often garnished with fresh radish and cilantro around out the menu, with top notch service to boot.
Mi marido ordered the breaded fried chicken, mexican corn and poblano mashed potatoes and gravy. The chicken was well seasoned with a great crunch. The potatoes had good flavor, but were barely warm. I can imagine their greatness heated. The mexican corn on the other hand was the real elote deal! The fresh snap of sweet corn, dosed with cotija cheese and spices lives up to the hype! Sweet, spicy, savory, it hit all the flavor profiles.
I had the naked chicken with an order crinkle fries(faves) which was greatly appreciated for it's gluten-freeness and flavor. However, it was abit overcooked. Which left it thready and a little dry. The sauce that accompanied it, was needed, but shouldn't have been, while the fries were fresh, but undercooked.
The concept and flavors make Brick & Bone standout on the chicken front. Better execution can make it a cut above the...
