Overall, I think the venue needs to work on Pacing, allowing the diners to converse and enjoy the nice venue. Plating and overall quality of the food being served should be double checked before leaving the kitchen. The reputation of the venue and menu lead me to believe it would be a more formal place, but the plating, quality, and service gave more casual. I understand this is a new venue and I hope to see the issues improved.
Beautiful venue and high potential for this restaurant to flourish in an area with limited options!
I was excited to dine here with a friend and enjoy the experience of dining in a nicer venue. We sat near the bar, which seemed to have a nice energy.
Upon entering the restaurant we were happily greeted by a hostess who sat us and left a good impression.
Service was fast, rushed. The appetizer came out quickly after ordering, the mozzarella burrata, and it was carelessly plated. For a less busy time, and short time for us to wait, I should expect at least decent plating for an almost $10 appetizer. (wondering if there is an expo position of some sort working in the back helping plate food?)
However it was enjoyable, and we ate it quickly. Almost as soon as we finished the appetizer the mains came out. My friend got the grilled chicken alfredo and I the veal parmesan. The alfredo was fine. The veal parmesan was disappointing, especially for the $22 price. The veal breading was burnt and the sauce didn’t meet expectations.
I appreciate the service and attention to the customer but we were seen by the server so often with little time in between that it felt like we where rushed.
I expected more parmesan to come with the dish, a friend later told me they will give you more upon request, however I was not aware that was an option. I think there should be parmesan at the table, or brought out with pasta orders. We were in and out in almost 30 minutes. I expected to be there much longer and enjoy...

When you choose to live rurally, like we do in the Northeast Kingdom, you have to accept that your dining options will be limited. And when you hear that a new restaurant is opening, you are excited to see what new culinary adventure awaits you. Unfortunately, 98Mill (the newest addition to the St Johnsbury restaurant repertoire) was a mediocre/disappointing food experience.
As people who have worked in the food service industry for many years, we walked in with a healthy understanding that on a busy Friday night in the first month of opening, things might not be as dialed in as they will one day be and the atmosphere was just that, a little wild.
I have no issue spending $120 (for two people) on a meal to support a local restaurant. What I do take issue with is when two of the three dishes are soggy and watery. Our fried calamari was more like bare squid with a breaddy mush sitting in the middle of the plate. The special of the night, frutti di mare (basically a seafood pasta), was butter water with overcooked shrimp and mussels and the fettuccine was so mangled, it looked more like Lipton chicken noodle soup.
My biggest gripe was not so much the food (again new place, working out the kinks on a super busy night) but when you charge $26 dollars a plate, please have real glassware and not plastic cups and plates covered in fingerprints. It’s not just the food we are paying for… it’s the WHOLE experience.
Our server was lovely and clearly frustrated, so I hope things improve.
For me, it’s about the food and enjoying a meal that I did not have to cook. Maybe on a different night it would have been better? But we will never know because we will never...
Read moreWe were staying the night in St. Johnsbury while traveling around the New England states. We got into town decently late at night, and we quickly learned that 98 Mill is one of very few places in town that is open past 7pm. We arrived just after 7 on a Saturday, and it was quite busy - which is to be expected, since again most other establishments were closed by then. The hostess was sweet, and it seemed that they were understaffed that night as she was often having to go clean tables to get people seated. It seemed a bit disorganized though, as we would see some tables sit empty and cleaned for 10 minutes before people would be seated there, and there was also a group that arrived after us that got seated before us (they were a party of 4, we were a party of 3). Once seated, there were several flies crawling on and flying around our table, not sure if that was throughout the restaurant or just our area. Not a great impression at first. But our server was very friendly, funny, and attentive once he came to take care of us. Our food came out surprisingly quickly, and it was delicious! I debated between rating this spot 3 or 4 stars, but ultimately settled on 4 - great service and food outweighed the disorganized seating system and some flies buzzing around,...
