The food was so good we forgot to take pictures! So, trust me when I say the presentation was stunning, surpassed only by the taste. Café Astoria’s new dinner service (Thursday through Saturday) is too good not to share. You won’t want to miss the antipasti misti (the first five appetizers). Come hungry or bring some friends because it’s generous, beautiful to behold, and tasty . The mortadella was delicate, the Marcona olives were perfectly salted and peppered with crispy garlic. The only disappointment: I wish there had been more radicchio salad (with persimmons and Gorgonzola.) Our party of four split two entrées: the campanelle carbonara and the goat cheese ravioli with smoked prosciutto. Of all the Italian foods I grew up eating, carbonara is not a favorite. But this was amazing as were the ravioli. The fresh pasta--made in-house, had the campanelle ringing with a delicate richness. One caveat, no liquor license. If wine is important to you, bring your own. Not exactly convenient, there are a few positives. You already know you like the wine. Due to the mark up structure in restaurants vs. off—sale (liquor stores) you will drink better wine. And no corkage fee! (But if you forget, there’s a bottle-shop down the street.) ** February 2024 update ** Celebrating a big family event, we booked a table for 8 only to need another 4-top upon arrival! Happily, there was space! The young staff were gracious and accommodating in seating our extra diners and the three flights of wine we brought from home. And the food!? Delicious! I’m impressed with the speed and consistently great food that Leah Raymundo and chef, John Occhiato produce in their relatively small kitchen. Saint Paul is lucky to host such a gem.

I can’t believe it took us so long to visit Cafe Astoria…it’s an absolute gem. The menu is incredibly broad and will appeal to a wide variety of dietary and/or culinary preferences. My wife chose a traditional breakfast of eggs, potatoes and toast. I ordered the “avo and egg,” which wasn’t my favorite avocado toast in town, but it was solid. I liked the addition of radishes and dill, but the dill was sparse. I also prefer a toasted sourdough for the bread, but I’m being pretty picky. (I did slather it in hot sauce before taking the photo.) Not shown in the photos is the pancake we ordered on the side. It was light, fluffy and quickly devoured. What really makes Cafe Astoria stand out for me is the coffee, ambiance and decor. It’s a cozy vibe with brick walls, nooks and crannies and plants all around. And the coffee, oh the coffee. I ordered the “Bee Sting,” which is espresso, wildflower honey, bee pollen and chili. It was hands down the best coffee or espresso drink I’ve had in recent memory. We’ll be back. There’s so much more to try on the menu. One parting thought: we couldn’t figure out how to customize our order, since everything is done via QR code. For instance, “no butter” is something my wife wanted to request, but there didn’t seem to be an option for customization. Maybe we missed it somehow, but we’ll ask next time!

As the photos show, Cafe Astoria takes its food presentation very seriously. Not only do the drinks look amazing but they taste just as good. The biggest complaints I’ve ever heard from people about this cafe is the prices or how long it tastes. Paying $4.50 is in no way more expensive than the big chain coffee shops. As someone who has been making drinks at Caribou for a year, I can tell you for a fact that our specialty drinks are actually more expensive in some cases than this cafe. As for the food, they make it fresh and are the same price wise as other cafes. I feel allot of small coffee shops receive negative feedback because they aren’t as fast as Starbucks or Caribou, but people need to understand they aren’t the same. Starbucks has machines that automatically dispense the correct size shot and that steam the milk for them. The reason they do this is for consistency and to make training easier. They are trained to get the drink out to you fast, even if presentation is lacking. Cafes like Astoria do all this themselves and on top of that make your drink beautiful. Most coffee chains are switching over to machines like this and it makes me sad. I hope one day I will be able to work at a cafe that cares about presentation and is clearly passionate about what they are doing.
