I was hesitant to try Tulie’s Bakery because several reviews mentioned poor customer service. But it was early on a quiet Sunday morning around 8:30 a.m., and I figured we might avoid the kind of experience others had described. Unfortunately, I was wrong.
There were only a few customers inside and outside, and plenty of staff, but we still experienced a long wait for just a black tea and a cheese Danish. While I stood waiting, I saw them begin prepping other orders before finishing mine. The staff didn’t seem busy, just distracted and slow.
I asked for honey in my tea, when I asked if I could see how much was going in, they acted like it was an inconvenience. They also started steeping my tea and assumed it was appropriate to steep it for five minutes without asking me, that would make my tea, bitter as black tea standard steep time is three minutes, and it depends on the tea. This is something you should ask your customer or at least hand it to them and let them decide how long they want to steep the teabag.
I also asked for my Danish to be warmed. Instead of doing it properly, they microwaved it, then shoved it into a paper bag on its side, with the cheese completely flipped upside down in the bag. When I said it wasn’t okay to serve it like that, the employee told me, “That’s what happens when you ask us to heat your pastry.” I had to explain that the issue wasn’t the heating, it was serving it sideways in a bag instead of upright or in a box. I should’ve taken a picture of what they served me and posted it, it was ridiculous.
This place doesn’t even bake their pastries on-site, they’re delivered from another location downtown, so don’t expect anything fresh from the oven. And while the Danish itself tasted good, it didn’t make up for the service.
The other reviews warning about bad customer service are completely accurate. I won’t support a business, no matter how good the product is, if they treat paying customers with laziness or disrespect. However, that being said, the pastry was good, not amazing or...
Read morethere’s room for improvement, Tulie. not in your food or baked goods or coffee... they’re amazingly delicious and they always have been! but your staff are just sad!
the last 3 or 4 times i’ve been in, there’s been no one at the counter. i’ve waited several minutes, with a line forming behind me. when someone does come to the counter, they don’t say anything... no “sorry for the wait,” no “how can i help you,” not even a “hello.” just a blank stare. i say thank you when they take my order or deliver my food, and there’s no response. just a plate slammed down on my table and an eye roll as they walk away. everyone just seems miserable. at first i thought it was a fluke, but it’s continued and it’s not just the same people. everyone working at this location seems to be having the worst day every day. it’s souring the whole experience and making me think twice before coming in.
i want to support local business but the neighborly vibes are just not...
Read moreZERO STARS!!!!!! ZERO!!!! I was asked by a volunteer for our homeless drive to go pick up pastries tonight after they closed from one of her friends who works there. Well her friend wasn't there but another guy was and he was soooooo unbelievably ignorant and rude and just plain nasty. I tried to tell him I was just picking up for someone who asked me to go there and he treated me like scum. Especially when he found out I was picking up for a homeless drive tomorrow. He was straight up disrespectful. I bit my tongue and was the bigger person and just left. But what made me upset is that the other woman there was saying they just throw the stuff away. And he was so adamant and just cold. I cried all the way home. If he treats me like that, I can't imagine how he would treat a homeless person. So sad. How can you treat a human like that? ZERO STARS!!! I hope this man wasn't the owner, he needs the stick removed from...
