Today, before the Babe and I start our Spring Cleanse to get these bodies ready for the summer, we decided to treat ourselves to Hoka Hoka Fuku. As an avid lover of Asian food and overseas travel, I love comparing my American eats to my time overseas, to see if the flavors from abroad can be found in eateries around my way.

With Asian food on my mind, the photos on the website did this establishment justice, as it woo'd me through the doors with the thoughts of Katsu and Ramen in my belly.

The Scene: Hoka Hoka Fuku can be easily accessed in the parking lot of Home Depot, multiple stores and is located off of Interstate 1604. The establishment's decor was reminiscent of an Okinawan restaurant that was adorned with lanterns and decor, that set the mood for a nice lunch.

The Meal: As this was our first time at Hoka Hoka, our waitress, who greeted us nicely highlighted some key items and explained some choices that were being placed on other tables. We decided to try.

The Gyoza Shrimp Tempura A to go order of : Tokayaki Shoyu Fuku Hokkaido Egg Tart Chicken Tontso Shrimp Ebi Katsu

The appetizers were out within minutes along with our drink orders. The gyoza stole the show as the juice poured out of them with each bite. The sear on the bottom was perfect, and the insides were plump with meat and vegetables. We moved quickly into our tempura appetizer and within minutes, our main course dishes were placed in front of us.

Everything was excellent and it's rare, due to my hunger that I can simply pause and eat to allow my senses to take over the meal. The smell of the flagrant curry hit me before the tray was placed down onto the table. The salad dressing was zesty/tangy and provided a great taste to the crunchy salad. With senses in overload, the chicken Katsu was just as flavorful and had a perfect crunch coating on the outside to accompany the moist meat.

I took a moment to share my babe's shrimp and was glad I took the option to add the bowl of curry for $3. While incredibly delicious, our meal with some orders to go was about $100. Ohhhhhh I miss the old days where one outing doesn't cost you a week's worth of groceries.

All in all, we loved everything and will definitely add this location to our Asian fix.

Highly recommended: Da...

They just opened so wont be too harsh on the review this is just so they can improve in the coming weeks .

Ambiance and Customer service is GREAT! no question there. friendly staff and management and nice cozy environment.

Service was slow but that was to be expected for a new restaurant they will adjust and learn and improve on this it was their friendly staff that made the wait ok and if they continue that they will do great.

i Did not like my food. It has potential but needs improvement.

A. Pork Buns were really soggy and the lettuce in it hard to explain but more of the stem was used so hard a harder crunch and to me felt like it was a leftover piece that was used. Pork tasted good but the sogginess of the bread took away from the overall experience of this. They fix this this is the top item to get.

B. Gyoza - maybe in the rush of trying to get so many orders ready they left them on the pan too long? top looked great until you turned them over and they were almost pitch black and inside tasted good but the charred piece took away from the overall flavor. Hopefully this was a one off as i heard this was a great item to try with them.

C. The Ramen - I was really excited to try the Ramen out i love ramen but was disappointed when i tried to grab ramen from the bowl with chopsticks and a whole boxed shaped ramen came up . I was not expecting prepacked ramen i was expecting fresh so was a little more than disappointed with this and had a little more sodium to my liking. The pork was good . if they procure better ramen and ease up just a dash on the salt it will be a great spot for my ramen fix.

This place has the potential to be really great and as the weeks go by and they fit into their rhythm things will improve ill come back in a few weeks to give it another try just wanted to make sure they got the feedback. I had gotten my food to go so it wasnt until i got home i got to see what the food was like maybe its different if eating at restaurant in that case the comments are to improve take...

Yet another quasi-Japanese restaurant in San Antonio without substance.. We visited HokaHoka Fuku during lunch hour. Their menu boasts a variety of Japanese style food, from fried rice to katsu combos, even seasonal oden. While variety is spice of life, it isn't necessarily a good sign for a restaurant. Specially when the categories of food they serve, like ramen or katsu, can all be successful stand-alone businesses without being crammed into a single menu. Our appetizer chicken karaage came dusted with furikake, a bit odd. It was under-cooked and lacks any discernible falvor. My girlfriend tried their Shirofuku tonkatsu ramen. The chashu was dencent but the broth was grey in color and tasted like powder soup base from an instant ramen pack. The characteristics of shoyu tare is completely absent. I ordered a set of kurobuta katsu combo. It came with a small pile of poorly chopped cabbage(should be finely shredded), rice and miso soup are of cafeteria quality. The katsu itself was the real Eye-opener. Half of the breading has already peeled and fallen off the pork. Very poorly prepared and shoddy cooking done in the kitchen... But I did get a sesame grinder for the katsu sauce. Servers were nice and patient but we did not get our water refilled. All in all, another miss for San Antonio japanese food scene. Feel free to give them a try, if you really have to spend some money on japanese food but don't care enough about...
