update to this review.* I quickly received a call from the managing partner of this location apologizing for our experience. We are both in agreement that this is a coaching opportunity and he vows to clarify the engagement about the call ahead feature. I truly appreciate when someone takes ownership of these types of mistakes. Its because of this call that I will definitely make effort to go in again and give them another try. Thank you again Beny.
9/9/2023 My family and I made the decision to get with a few friends to watch our Alma maters' football game at Parry's @ 1604 and Culebra. Anticipating that there would be a wait I called ahead for seating at 3:23 pm for a 5:30 pm table. I actually made several calls, but the option to get in touch with the Hostess for this request was not available, so I called again and selected the option for take out order. I explained to the woman on the phone what was happening and that I kept getting voicemail and she said she believes that function is not working right now, but she would be happy to get me take care of. I explained to her that we had a party of 6 and that I have a special request for a low top table, as my 10 year old has a disability and in a wheel chair. Again she said no problem, took my number and name and said we will see you soon. We arrived at the establishment at 5:15pm, mind you there is not one single soul waiting in the foyer and plenty of parking outside. I immediately introduced myself and began to say, we called ahead and before I could finish, she said, "JACOB?". I responded by saying yes. She than started to look around and asked for us to have a seat, as she would call when the table was ready. I then told my wife that I was taking out Son to the restroom. Upon our return my wife said, I have some bad news. The hostess told her that the table that they would have sat us at was just sat before us and we would have at least an hour wait As I pondered our next move as our fiends were pulling into the parking lot, I asked to speak to a Manager and out walks Sabrina. I explained to Sabrina our issue and my discontentment, especially when I called more than 2 hours ago to secure space. Her response was, you spoke to me earlier and when we place you on the list all that does is put you in place, its not a reservation. I explained that the reason I called ahead was because we anticipated you guys to be busy, the game we wanted to watch begins at 6pm and more importantly I have a disabled child in a wheelchair. I even received the text message showing we were in line. Again, she proceeded to share they don't so reservations and if we would like she could happily sit us outside. Yeah, sure, that's exactly what I wanted is to sit outside in 103 degree weather. (probably the reason no one else was out there) My suggestion to her as a manger was she could have easily explained all of this to me earlier. So, that we could have made effort to be there sooner Poor customer service, poor communication and not the first experience I wanted and or expected. Oh, and to think we were all excited for the experience. Needless to say, we left and found somewhere else to spend our money.. Good luck, hope your experience is...
Read moreOk. So, I only gave 4 stars because Parry's advertises itself as "New York Style Pizza". Other than that, this place might deserve 5 stars.
I'm from New York City. Many restaurants toute NY Style pies. Few, if any, actually deliver.
To me, a true New York pie is made up of a hand-tossed dough. Not too heavy on the sauce, but not dry. Cheese is plentiful. Bubbly and gooey. When you pull the slices apart, the cheese stretches across the table. The pie crust is golden brown. The bottom is brown with a slight crispness. And the pie tends to be slightly greasy. This is the NY pizza I remember and miss.
Parry's pizza is served on a very thin crust. Pizza was dry. Cheese was minimal. dough was not browned. Honestly, their pie reminded me more of a frozen thin-crust pizza more than anything else. It was edible. Tasted ok. That's about it. Sorry, Parry's 🫤
Aside from the pizza, my wife and I loved the place. We split a Caesar salad which was amazing! She ordered a chicken melt of sorts. Pizza dough folded over a combo of grilled bar-b-cued chicken, bacon bits, cheese, sauce, etc. Was good. I ordered a Philly Steak sandwich. My sandwich was delicious! Very tasty and not skimpy on the meat at all. Fries were fries, and they were ok.
The dining area is very inviting. Open, casual and friendly. We sat at a table, but we agreed the bar also appeared most inviting.
Our server, Ollie (hope the spelling is correct) was very courteous and helpful and quick. The place looked like it was just beginning to hop. Time was around the beginning of happy hour.
Nice crowd. Good mix of different ages. Very upbeat. Plenty of servers running back and forth.
Overall, we both really liked Parry's. We saw many other menu items we'd like to try, so we will definitely go back. Someone at a nearby table ordered wings. They looked yummy.
For those who aren't as picky about pizza pies, I guess the pizza is of a lighter fare than the heavier pizzas I remember. That said, Parry's pies may appeal to some. The taste was ok. The pie just didn't thrill me. But then again, this is San Antonio. To be fair, one cannot really find a true NY style pizza parlor around here lol.
Everything else was very good. Parry's also has a very extensive beer list. Next time, we will sample from that list as well.
A fun crowd. Probably a great date night dining spot. Some really good food. Average prices. Very clean new establishment. Nice area. Good service. Plenty of parking.
Highly...
Read moreOur first experience here unfortunately left a bad taste in our mouths from lack of service. We arrived and put our name down for a table. We sat at the bar since there was room and we were thirsty. The bartender finally dropped some menus after passing us numerous times and walked away. By 14 minutes I walked to the hostess and asked for a manager. He did apologize and asked what he could do to make our experience better. I wanted to leave but we had friends meeting us there. So we took them up on the offer to be seated and served immediately. I didn't want anything to do with the lady that calls herself a bartender. She had plenty of time to carry on conversations with plenty of other patrons while ignoring us. If you look at other reviews apparently this is an ongoing problem at this restaurant. Once we sat down the waitress we had was great and constantly making sure we were ok. Pizza was good, cheese bread and Parmesan fries were very tasty. A big warning these booths are very small! I don't say that often but seriously super limited on space . Very uncomfortable booths. I don't understand how this happened as you look around and they all look like that. Again if you read reviews you'll notice this is not uncommon patrons being ignored and leaving and management consistently just apologizing like they are very aware of this routine practice. I don't think we'll be back. Overall rating was for effort in the end and good food. If I could put a 0 for service I would. Oh and by the way the bartender kept giving us a look during the whole meal which added to our experience in a negative way. Sorry complaining about you for not...
