Cali Banh Mi — Restaurant in San Diego

Great news! The Cali Baguette family (which owns this location in Point Loma as well as others around SD) has totally relaunched this location with full, traditional menu! I've been by 4 times in the past week or so, each time checking out different parts of the menu to see how they stack up to the original family standard, as well as places around the Point Loma / OB area.

Hands down, best VN food in the entire area! All of the banh mi are dynamite, and they bake all the baguettes fresh!! Better than Bread and Cie, by far! I just got back from France two weeks ago, and I gotta say, Cali Banh Mi is doing it right. In addition to the wide range of traditional favorites (meat and veg), you can always mix and match (like grilled spam and lemongrass beef, etc.), add extra veg, butter sauce, you name it. Now, personally special and important for me is the addition of Chao (rice porridge) to the menu, which is one of my all time favorites!! Great for breakfast or any fall or winter day, will warm you right up! Nice variety of other dishes too, which I still have to sample them all, but will do shortly. The bun (rice noodle bowls) are right on, and the com (fried rice) is dynamite! Yesterday I had a combo fried rice and a bowl of chicken curry, so freaking good!! Light, a little sweet, savory but not salty, little squeeze of lime...perfection! Don't forget about the fresh spring rolls, you can even get them to add the fresh roasted pork belly!! Wowzers! Two types of fried roll (one wheat wrapper, one rice, same filling I think) totally spot on, and they've revised the nuoc mam cham (prepared fish sauce) to be much more traditional and correctly balanced.

None of this would be possible without the passion and energy of Aunty Thuy, whose amazing energy, focus, and dedication to authentic, correct flavors have gifted Point Loma / OB with a truly awesome and delightful treasure.

Tin tuyệt vời! Gia đình Cali Baguette (sở hữu địa điểm này ở Point Loma cũng như các địa điểm khác quanh khu vực San Diego) đã tái khởi động địa điểm này với thực đơn đầy đủ, truyền thống! Tôi đã đến đây khoảng 4 lần trong tuần qua, mỗi lần đều xem qua các phần khác nhau của thực đơn để xem chúng có phù hợp với tiêu chuẩn gia đình ban đầu hay không, cũng như các địa điểm quanh khu vực Point Loma / OB.

Không còn nghi ngờ gì nữa, đây là món ăn Việt Nam ngon nhất trong toàn khu vực! Tất cả các loại bánh mì đều tuyệt vời, và họ nướng tất cả các loại bánh mì baguette tươi ngon!! Ngon hơn cả Bread and Cie, ngon hơn hẳn! Tôi vừa trở về từ Pháp hai tuần trước, và phải nói rằng Cali Banh Mi đang làm rất tốt. Bên cạnh nhiều món ăn truyền thống được yêu thích (thịt và rau củ), bạn luôn có thể kết hợp (như thịt hộp nướng và thịt bò sả, v.v.), thêm rau củ, sốt bơ, vân vân. Và điều đặc biệt và quan trọng đối với tôi là việc bổ sung món Cháo (cháo gạo) vào thực đơn, một trong những món tôi yêu thích nhất mọi thời đại!! Tuyệt vời cho bữa sáng hay bất kỳ ngày thu đông nào, sẽ làm bạn ấm lòng ngay! Còn rất nhiều món khác nữa, tôi vẫn phải thử hết, nhưng sẽ sớm thôi. Món bún (bún gạo) rất ngon, và món cơm chiên thì tuyệt đỉnh! Hôm qua tôi đã ăn combo cơm chiên và một bát cà ri gà, ngon tuyệt cú mèo!! Vị thanh nhẹ, hơi ngọt, mặn nhưng không mặn, một chút chanh vắt vào... hoàn hảo! Đừng quên món chả giò tươi, bạn thậm chí có thể gọi thêm thịt ba chỉ nướng tươi nữa chứ!! Tuyệt vời! Hai loại chả giò (một loại vỏ bánh mì, một loại cơm, hình như cùng một loại nhân) hoàn toàn tuyệt vời, và họ đã cải tiến nước mắm (nước mắm pha sẵn) để mang hương vị truyền thống hơn và cân bằng hơn.

Tất cả những điều này sẽ không thể thành hiện thực nếu không có niềm đam mê và năng lượng của cô Thúy, người có năng lượng tuyệt vời, sự tập trung và tận tâm với những hương vị đích thực, chính xác đã mang đến cho Point Loma / OB một kho báu thực sự tuyệt vời và thú vị.

This Cali Bahn Mi in Point Loma has the Vietnamese sandwiches, rice, soups, spring rolls and other delicious stuff. It is family owned and they make the most delicious French baguette in house. Everything here is delicious. The price on everything is low cost and very much worth every penny. The staff is friendly especially Thuy (Twee). She is the sweetest most energetic, lovely hearted person I have ever met. The inside seating is extremely comfortable and very inviting. I brought my husband the second time I visited since he was out of town on my first visit and he is hooked on the Spring Rolls as well as the Sandwiches. He also loves the prices of everything for the size of the servings you get. We go weekly because we want to try all the Bahn Mi and Spring Rolls. If you come to Point Loma or visit San Diego you absolutely have to visit Cali Bahn Mi and try everything on the menu. The locations is nice, the interior looks great, the staff if friendly, the food is fast, and I'm sure other things on the menu are great. So why the 2 stars?

Their namesake, the Bahn Mi, is terrible. Not to say it doesn't taste fine, but it isn't a bahn mi. I ordered what looked like the closest thing to a pork Bahn Mi, the Dac Biet. What I got: The biggest offense, instead of a cripy baguette it is a long soft dinner roll. I've never seen this before and its a terrible idea. It has deli meat versions of the standard pork and patte, which in many parts in Vietnam are standard, but it is the fast food equivalent. The jalapenos, which are obviously an American addition common here, are sliced like coins instead of long ways. The sauces are lacking. In total, biting into this bahn mi is like eating a McDonald hamburger when you expect a real hamburger. It is not a deficit on the staff that makes it, but the recipe used, so I don't see it changing. Go right over to Pho Saigon right down the street. They know how to make a...
