As neighborhood as it gets this sports theme’d bar does more than sell Coors lights and flat top burgers. It’s got more of a brewery feel to it with the open seating, patio, games and there is a sports ness to it, it’s not about watching the game so much as being sporty. I have friends that enjoy football, but not all of them enjoy nascar and most of both of them don’t enjoy golf and the rest of them just like enjoying a patio with some beer and friends. Well H&A provides something for everyone.
Excellent beer selection, plenty of variety for every style and size of brewery, not just the local craft stuff. The food is pretty simple, but what you’ll notice is they have smoked meats which they cook all through the day and night enticing you to come in without you really even knowing it. Being in Old Town I wonder how many people come down here looking for Mexican food and end up here. Tots and nachos are those “base” we all need and they do them well. I’ve gotten everything here from a mescal/green chartreuse snack bite to watermelon lager from San Francisco to a pineapple rum negroni sour, so their staff know what’s up on drinks.
They have TV’s strategically placed, not everywhere like some places, but strategically (like in some tables). There are purse hooks and USB ports on outlets. The décor is subtle to all sports and not just San Diego Sports or the big 3. The patio is where it’s at with shade, darts, corn hole, giant jenga (easy now, it’s still jenga, not drinking jenga or sex jenga). Parking is mostly street, but it’s easy to find and get to. This is Old Town so don’t get too crazy.
Prices are very good, like it’s the off season, except it’s not. Service is great at the bar, but they also tend to be understaffed due to the fairweatherness of San Diego Sports fans.
All in all it’s a great place to watch sports, relax, grab some...
Read moreFood and ambience are excellent! I really enjoyed trying out this place and definitely would return for the food and the relaxed vibe. Also, the bathrooms were awesome (weird, but true). The only things that make me knock off a star is that there are a few inevitable awkward moments that could be avoided. Let me explain: when I walked in at 7 on a Thursday to meet a group of friends, I encountered a mostly empty room with loud music and a small group of guys at the bar who all turned to stare at me. I was not prepared for the "making an entrance" on-the-spot feeling from that and it threw me off a little. This could be fixed by the bartenders calling out a welcome instead of turning to stare with the patrons. Just make it feel a little welcoming! The second related thing is ordering food. You order at the bar, but there isn't a good spot of open counter to do so: you end up awkwardly leaning over the barstools to order and groups of people don't quite know where to queue up so you get little clumps of people with the menu standing near, but not quite at, the bar. Awkward. Give clear direction for ordering, not just "at the bar" for those who will be sitting outside and who aren't planning to be at the bar for longer than it takes to order. The food and drinks were amazing. I had two Moscow Mules: my drink of choice, and they were really excellent here--no small feat in my book. And we split the pork nachos and The 22 burger. The nachos were a tad too spicy for me but I'm a total spice wimp; my husband didn't think they were spicy at all. They were still delicious but I tried to avoid the green sauce. The burger was ode-worthy. Brie and Gruyere on burger? Decadent, yet somehow casual. The patio was lovely, especially at night, and I had a great time. I'd come...
Read moreMy wife and I come to San Diego every winter from our home in KC. (we used to live here and enjoy coming back to avoid cold KC winters). So naturally we have to go to a place to watch our KC Chiefs. We found Home & Away. - a great KC Chiefs watch location.
OMG these guys are great!
They are truly a KC Chiefs bar, (not a wanna be that just hangs a banner and says yea we support the team of the week).
I am pretty sure its the owner who goes around w/ a bull horn during the game to fire up the crowd. (they don't even do that at the bars in Kansas City during games..
Food is great.. good selection, very tasty, all over the board options. You go up to the counter to order, and they bring it out to you. (its always hot).. Drinks are done the same way.. Go up to the counter and order your drinks and take them back to the table with you. For the AFC championship game, these guys and gals at Home & Away had it going on. (they learned that the previous weekend play off game for KC, made it a little crowded for everyone - even though they have a pretty large outdoor dining and drinking area). So for the AFC championship game they blocked off most of the front parking, brought in more tables and chairs.. set up another big screen TV, had a Dj, and additional food and drink service out doors.. Wow..
I would say about 500 fans showed up, but it was never crazy crowded, and service from everyone who worked the event was AMAZING..! win or lose.. the folks at Home & Away took care of everyone.. See you there for the Super Bowl Watch Party...
