Read moreFor a state historic park, there should be a greater focus on creating an educational and engaging experience for visitors if the goal is to promote and honor the early days of San Diego settlers.
During my visit on a weekday, many of the historic buildings were locked and inaccessible, with no signage to offer any explanation. The exhibits that were open had informational boards, but that was the extent of it. For anyone with little to no knowledge of the state’s history, the information was difficult to follow. There were no staff present to provide guidance, which left my visit feeling lacking in depth and interaction. Instead of immersing visitors in history and culture, the park is dominated by numerous commercialized gift shops. There is also a beautiful area with Mexican restaurants and more gift shops.
Overall I left the park with an impression that it is a tourist trap disguised as a historic park.
Just outside the park, the street was lined with even more restaurants, and shops/ stalls selling cheap and...
Read moreI think what I love most about visiting this state park is that I can enjoy every aspect of this rich cultural experience from my wheelchair. All displays, museums, and stores are accessible (though some stores do have tight aisles). But over all it's a unique experience with fabulous food options and fun for the entire family--even those in wheelchairs. I particularly enjoy the seasonal and historical events for Christmas, Easter, and the commemoration of the Mormon Battalion that helped dig wells and build the courthouse. I love seeing the volunteers in costumes of the 1840's era from when Old Town was just starting. I love learning about the trades of the era and tasting the foods, too. It's challenging to find accessible fun for the entire family. Old Town is a win every time. It's become a family favorite. I particularly enjoy panning for gold FOR FREE and learning about the people who helped settle Old Town. The park is well maintained. I'm happy to...
