Let me set the scene so this makes it more clear: It’s 4 PM on a Friday, 5 hours before this restaurant is set to close. Not a single soul of a customer is around or inside the restaurant. Literally not a single customer. I go inside to the counter and sit there for 20 minutes (yes I watched and counted, yes it was that long). Only one employee is behind the counter who seems like a chef that doesn’t speak a whole lot of English (I get it). Looks at me, doesn’t say a word, and just walks into the back. That was around minute 2. Around minute 10 I say “hello?” and said employee comes back out, looks at me, points to the back, and disappears again. Okay, definitely a little weird. In the whole 20 minutes + 5 I went in and out, not a single customer showed up despite the restaurant being open for another 5 hours. Not a SINGLE employee came to see if I needed anything or wanted to order. It was just dead like a cemetery with South Park bustling around it livened up by the Friday night mood.
Honestly upset I waited so long to even be helped or greeted but I wanted to see how long I could push it. Turns out 20 minutes of silence was my limit. I cannot recommend enough that people just go to any of the plenty other restaurants around the area of South Park that actual care about customer service and are happy to provide it. Or for that matter, even notice you as a person. Deeply and morally I cannot recommend people come here for food. It wouldn’t be right as a person to subject anyone to go through the ignorance of a restaurant that is surprisingly bringing in any funds to stay open.
I can’t even speak on the food because I wasn’t even...
Read moreFor every good taco shop in SD there is a bad one, and Sombrero is my least favorite.
I've eaten there a lot purely out of convenience, yet less and less frequently over the years. The employees are always friendly and the place itself is okay to look at, but the food just sucks.
If I do order something it's usually the chile relleno burrito. Probably what makes it most edible is that it is a wet burrito, so the rubbery blandness of the flour tortilla is less apparent. Although I rarely order a carne asada or california burrito, I recall the meat being pretty good most of the time, but occasionally did not taste fresh. Another plate I think they do right is juevos rancheros. And the breakfast torta is another thing I'll go for, although small and greasy.
Whatever you do, avoid anything with shredded beef in it, such as rolled tacos or beef tacos. It is the absolute worst and you will throw your food away. Their salsa is not very good either, but I'll eat it. One last thing that sucks about them is they put every single item in a styrofoam container. True, all Mexican restaurants overuse them, but Sombrero will put a single taco in its...
Read moreI used to drive out of my way to get dinner here for everyone because. .. well, I'm not sure why... maybe because of the incandescent sign and the fact they have several locations, so they must be doing something right? Wrong. The food is average. The establishment smells like mouse pee. It's always freezing inside too. They have messed up my order almost every time and the last time I had to drive back and exchange it, the "sweet" lady that's always there made sure I knew it was my fault, not the cook... in a "sweet" voice though. Dont try to call an order because there is a horrid girl who works there and she is the most graceless creature I have ever had the misfortune to speak to. She is very unruly and rude and I always see her lick her thumbs when counting money. I don't trust a person like that to bag my food. I found a new place called Glorias and the man there is so polite and warm. I'll be dropping by there...
